Spite today’s misadventure I still was able to get in some good exercise. Roughly 14km and 22k steps - it was good time even if my plans went sideways (I don’t think I’ll have trouble next time I go to plan anything on this particular path - Deadman’s Bay Path). I was going to go swimming but there was 20 people too many in the swimming hole above Fort Amherst for my liking. I guess this is what everyone is doing in their spare time but I’d still like to remind people that we are still in a pandemic - you probably shouldn’t be bringing the whole neighbourhood on a 100+ metre ascent to go for a dip. Especially in a small pond that’s about as large on around as my house (which is just your average modest town house). I got some very funny tan lines on my shoulders from my backpack (I had to pack lunch and my water bottle yanno). I’m slightly burnt, I swear I put on sunscreen - I even asked my fiancée to lather up my back for me (I can reach just not well). Guess other than that I’ll have to revise my plans for next time, maybe I’ll finally go for that dip in Freshwater Pond on the other side of the hill since there’s nice sand at the bottom. I’d be a-okay with that. #ect #ectlove #eastcoasttrail #deadmansbaypath #stjohns #fortamherst #sheaheights #afternoonadventures #misadventure #hiking #eastcoast #swimming #summer #notasplanned #covidlife #tanlines https://www.instagram.com/p/CC9vSExsNfD/?igshid=13qicoje4pfl3
I went for a smallish hike today that was supposed to be a lot longer but unfortunately it had been cut short. I was hoping to do a loop of Deadman’s Bay Path starting from Shea Heights to the Fort Amherst trailhead via the northern path and then come back up and do the southern path. Unfortunately this didn’t happen, I just want to let other hikers know since I made the attempt but the path that’s on the northern side of the hill is far too overgrown to traverse. It’s a lot of bushwhacking and fun scrapes and scratches going through the brush for anybody who’s curious. I just want to also say that the directions on the ECT website for the Shea Heights entryway aren’t correct. Pictured above is the path that veers off the dirt road from the radio/telephone tower (I’m not sure what it is but the place looks rundown) - there is no trail leading up the northern side of the hill from here, it’s cuts across to the southern trail and rejoins at roughly where sandy bottom pond is. I will say there’s a terribly muddy part that you’re probably going to need boots for if you take this route (thankfully I’ve got my trusty hikers). Anyways, not every adventure goes perfectly. So expect the unexpected. It’s good to get out and stretch the legs especially on the nice days. Glad I went for a hike the other day to soak my feet in the swimming hole behind me here, I think I really needed that. Don’t forget about you. It’s important to take care of yourself. #eastcoasttrail #deadmansbaypath #freshwaterbay #summeriscoming #ectlove #sunshine #newfoundland #canada #eastcoast #me #nofilter https://www.instagram.com/p/CBa2NUPhomX/?igshid=5mm6vllnuw3q
Sometimes getting sweaty, tuckering yourself out, climbing steep hills, and wanting to give up is all worth what you find on the other side. That’s what this is, it was one hell of a journey to find this cute slice of nature sitting quietly undisturbed. This was September 2nd 2019, the day I decided to drag my best friend up one of the steepest hills in the city. Life’s funny like that. There’s going to be times where you’ll have to push yourself and there’ll be times where you’ll have to take a step back to breathe. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when you should do either but the main thing is to know it’s just a moment, as long as you don’t stay down - stay stagnant - you can go forward and put what you need behind you. It’s hard to do that, it’s hard to let go but there’s times where it’s for the best. Maybe it was the doubt of letting everyone down, maybe it’s letting down yourself. There’s going to be times where you’ll have to make tough decisions and when you look back on them they weren’t nearly as bad as you thought they were at the time. That’s kind of how it goes I guess. Getting up to the top of the hill that sits behind Fort Amherst wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be and getting back on track out my slump won’t be either. Hind sight isn’t always 20/20 but anxiety over what’s to come is never reflective of reality either. Once you do something once you can do it twice; the second time is never as bad as the first. Just something to remember. Maybe a gentle reminder for myself... #deadmansbaypath #eastcoasttrail #newfoundland #hiking #innerthoughts #springiscoming #goodbyewinter #mentalhealth #reminder #soldierspond #nature #personal #summer2019 #september2019 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9EnyrMnzNa/?igshid=831wzhcquptz
