DE:CODE NOVEMBER 2019 EVALUATION
2nd task ; remembering choreographies
dancing.Â
dancing is, by far, one of the worst performance skills that seonho has up his sleeve. in the two years he has been a royal trainee, he has had so many different evaluations in the months to learn and practice dance. he has spent so much time in the practice rooms working on dance until his feet ache and his knees bleed.
but still, dancing is not something heâs very good at or something heâs ever really enjoyed for that matter. heâs a singer, and vocal skills are what he has always been graced in talent in.Â
âggggghhhhhaaa.â is the sound that leaves him as he slowly lowers to the ground after having run through the groups choreo for what feels like the thousandth time. he isnât good with dance, and he knows that. but these dances... these dances are the ones for his group. the ones for his debut group--de:code. the group he is set to debut under.Â
he wants to do good at these dances.Â
âokay! one more time!â he cheers himself on in the mirror, striking a few cool poses before moving over to hit the music again so he could another run through. here was still some time time before they were supposed to show off to the coaches as a team. to show not only their own skills, but skills as a group. to move as one and to follow the dance in the fluid movements of those idols on stage. he thinks of his noonas, luxe sunbaenim, and their stages when they perform at music shows.Â
â5 and 6, 7, 8...â he starts up again, sweat rolling down his forehead as he starts again. even singing along with the track as he thinks about his part along with the dance. knowing one day he was going to be required to dance and sing this song. that when he debuts he might end up on the same stages as his sunbae and that he would have to do what theyâre doing too.Â
each run through feels like it gets easier and easier, but seonho is determined to make sure he is on time, and his steps are sharp. thanks to baekhyunâs help, heâs finally starting to understand the feeling behind the music.Â
now itâs time to show the coaches that heâs getting ready, that heâs almost there.

¡  ¡  ¡  ¡  ¡  ¡  ¡  ¡  ¡    DE:CODE NOVEMBER 2019 EVALUATION,
   ⧠â  2nd task ă   remembering choreographies ( PERFORMANCE )
shifting on his spot on the floor to cross his legs underneath him, baekhyun takes a look around the practice room. gaze following the steps of some other members who are using their time waiting for their coach to arrive for a little more practice -- it makes him proud, somehow. that theyâre not sitting around, that theyâre working so hard.
he should do the same. probably.
go through the steps once more, working through their routines to make sure each step sits right and that he remembers all of them well. perfection is expected, flawless teamwork and moving fluidly like well-oiled machines even at this stage of their preparations. no room for mistakes ( as they saw last month with jihoon ) and, he thinks, with him as the leader even less. not only does he have to make sure that they all are doing well, that they all spend enough time with practice and are prepared for evaluations like these but he also canât make any mistakes himself. has to take care of them but also himself, keep up with everything as much as they do.
and itâs a hard task. one he still tries to ease himself into because itâs different from simply watching over the royal boys, offering to be there for them in times of need, making sure they take their breaks.Â
but still all he does is watch the others as his fingers move against his thigh, absently drumming to the rhythm of the music thatâs playing. their songs. his head softly bops along to the demo as well, wondering when they will record their lines, when they will get to hear the full songs. their voices, their colours in it. all of that instead thinking about steps as he should.
thatâs alright, though. baekhyun knows heâll do okay. might not be able to get all the steps to sit perfectly, maybe even get some of them wrong ( he does ) or miss a few of them ( that too ). but it will be okay. heâll do okay, theyâll do well. because, at this moment, he only cares about watching them.Â
this is their forte, their comfort zone. he doesnât bring it up, and honestly, he doesnât really like thinking about it at all but after the way the coaches spoke to jihoon in their meeting, won thinks getting to dance so much this month possibly brings him a little more joy than usual. it would him, at least, if he were in jihoonâs position. it didnât feel like the coach had much respect for him, but perhaps the shock of it blew it out of proportion in his head. he thinks maybe itâd have been a conversation better had in private. regardless, he pushes it to the back of his head. theyâre dancing this month, their vocal lines are the least of wonâs worries.Â
âso, tell me. dancer to dancer, which song do you prefer?â he asks curiously, downing half of his bottle of water immediately after. pushing his hair off his forehead does very little to cool him down when it just sticks back to his skin straight away but for that brief few seconds, itâd been bliss. âI get the feeling âwhat time is it now?â is going to be more popular with fans, but... which is your favourite to dance to?â he isnât an industry expert but he has been a stereotypical fan himself for a while. cuter concepts on boy groups donât always do as well; itâs a shame, though heâs grateful thereâs also always exceptions. âthen, which is your favourite to listen to? I feel like by the time we release them, Iâm going to have listened to them enough to hate them a little.â he laughs quietly, downing another mouthful of water before throwing it back to his bag with a soft thud.
this isnât all that different to last month â in fact, it should be easier because heâs a dancer above everything else, but that fact just makes everything worse because he feels like he has more to lose.Â
in reality, he knows that messing up a bit here is only a hurdle, not a stop sign, but that doesnât mean he wants to encounter either. he wants these final performances of their new songs to go as well as possible. any other circumstances and maybe heâd a be a bit complacent, but itâs lucky he isnât here even if the flip side isnât quite ideal either. thinking too highly of himself just opens him to failure, but this way, heâs a little more aware of the world around him, of his movements and the beat. he shakes out his limbs to try and brush off a little more of his nervousness. his conversation with his boyfriend before this had done a lot for him but won will likely always still worry before important performances like this â he wants to be worthy of his place in de:code, of his positions and the miracle of getting to debut with the love of his life. he said the same on the mgas, but heâd fight to the end to protect their dream, to see it come to life.Â
as the wait drags ( or maybe it just feels as such to him ), he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. heâs itching to get going, to move. fidgety seems to be his default setting lately with everything going on, but a glance over at mingyu reminds him to take a deep breath and re-centre. he canât do this if he psyches himself out. he just has to calm down.Â
he barely registers when the coaches tell them to get in formation ready to go. all of sudden, everyoneâs moving around him and a finger hovers above the play button. he scrambles to his position, exhaling out one last sigh before they start.Â
âIâm fineâ is first, the cuter song initially being his favourite. over the course of last month learning the lyrics, âwhat time is it now?â had crept into his heart more and more and having gotten the choreographies this month, solidified itself as his preferred of the two. there isnât much in it, but the latterâs more energetic dance made wonâs heart pound just that little bit moreâ made it just that little bit more exciting. he doesnât mind more vibrant dances ( hell, he auditioned for the mgas with a mash-up of lc9â˛s dream girl and nct dreamâs my first and last, so he definitely doesnât have any qualms ) and he isnât one to automatically paint more energetic ones as âbetterâ or âharderâ, but the opportunity to showcase any level of power in stage presence is something heâs keen on. this is their first chance to show the world what theyâre capable of and heâs glad it shouldnât be wasted. he wonât allow himself to waste it.Â
by the end of the first minute, heâs already passed his first vocal lines and his few seconds of solo focus. he moves with a healthy mix of practised and natural fluidity, smiling at jihoon when they high five. as dancers, he wonders if jihoon feels the same pressure to do well today, but he hadnât said anything â just in case he then did. honestly, he doesnât appreciate the dabbing towards the end ( isnât that kind of an old trend now or is that the point? are they supposed to be relatable and funny? itâs a little embarrassing to him, his cheeks a soft pink as they face the coaches. truthfully, though he prefers their second song, he has to admit that this one is a lot more fun. lighthearted and cute, itâs a refreshing concept that feels like a good pick-me-up in the colder months, though he knows itâll likely be a while before they release the two tracks.Â
even when the music stops, he feels the need to keep bouncing because of the mood it leaves him in but he knows itâll only be moments before they have to start the second song, his favourite â âwhat time is it now?â a funkier beat, all he can hear is the loud thumps of their feet hitting the floor, particularly in the chorus. in practice, heâd kept an eye on everyone else as he danced to make sure they were well spaced from each other for kicks and formation changes especially. now, he does his best not to, to keep looking forward towards their audience. the last thing he wants is to miss a beat because heâs too busy making sure no one else does. if he makes a mistake, he might put someone else off, too; a domino effect.Â
so he dances to the best of his ability, using what he learnt dancing with others in the mgas and through his over a year now with royal to balance his own skill with everyone elseâs. itâs one thing to be a talented dancer, but itâs another to blend into a group without sacrificing that. he can be a good dancer without being too powerful or standing out too dramatically. he smiles as he moves, follows the choreography well, even as he has to push himself up off the floor smoothly. ( embarrassingly, he hadnât had the strength to do that consistently at the beginning of the month. this time, he just does it. itâs enough to fool anyone a certain distance away but if you zoomed in, youâd probably notice how his feet stumble a little. he doesnât think about it, focuses on finishing the song without hesitation or fault.Â
he expects things to be unpolished. a month is a long time, but for a whole group, it can take time for everyone to be in sync, for different skill levels to learn each movement to the point that itâs instinct. maybe theyâll even change bits after seeing them all doing it together; maybe bringing shorter members to the front more or easing up on complicated footwork. he doesnât know, but heâs excited. with two new dances under his belt, this is all starting to feel very real and quick. whatâs next? he canât wait to find out.Â
ROYALs WHITE LOTUS
Lee Seunghwan alias Seo Kang Joon
DE:CODE Pre-debutăReadyă&ăSetă
November 2019 Evaluation
dancing wouldnât be the one thing he would be known for, he thought, whenever he was facing a new choreography to learn. over the course of the last months, kang joon had improved a lot (considering the level he had started off), but he still knew that he would never be able to pull off an awesome freestyle dance like the other members would be able to. he just hoped his effort was enough for him to not be bashed by netizens for his lack of dancing skill ever again. kang joon didnât wanted to be the weakest link of their chain, though reality was different. compared to the others he was just too less of an angel to grow wings on stage and fly effortlessly.
nonetheless, despite of the knowledge about his own limits kang joon struggled through every bit of the choreography, memorized every detail that had to be recognized after being taught by minho. as long as he would be able to follow the choreography, it would be ok, wouldnât it?
just like during the month before, he preferred what time is it over iâm fine. it just felt like he was more compatible with that kind of concept than with the other. this wasnât the first evaluation as future boy group member, but somehow he felt the most pressured about this month, as he knew the coaches eyes would especially lay on him who was still lacking. but even then, when he felt their piercing look every now and then, kang joon kept his posture, and followed the routine he had ram into his body the past november weeks. if there was something he had control of, then it was his charm he knew when and how to use. without glancing over to one of the other boys, since he then would be aware of his own faults, the oldest royal trainee kept going until the performances were done.

though performing what theyâve been working on for the month on the last day isnât any different to their trainee evaluations, their performances as de:code feel a hundred times more stressful. he knows that itâll take much more than messing up a bit of their new choreographies to get him kicked out the project, but even just the thought of being scolded ( in front of everyone, too ) scares the shit out of him. dancing is his speciality, he should be fine â should. itâs just as dangerous, if not more, to be complacent, though. god, he doesnât know. instead, he cards his fingers into his hair, hangs his head in his hands and tugs on the strands. he hears mingyu softly exhale beside him. just in case heâs noticed, won lets go before mingyu can encourage him to. he uses his now free hands to reach for mingyuâs right, the one closest to him, and squeezes.Â
âthe wait is the worst part, huh?â his laugh is quiet, uncertain. itâs not funny at all, but won is so nervous he doesnât really know what else to do. âdonât worry about this performance too much.â hypocrite. âitâs important, of course, but thereâs still time to polish things. we donât even have a release date yet, so Iâm sure thereâs plenty of time to really feel confident and comfortable. weâll be doing it in our sleep by the time they release, right?â heâs not sure who heâs trying harder to comfort; mingyu or himself.Â
being in the dance studio after hours isnât unfamiliar to won at all. heâs accustomed to the harsh lighting above his head, how itâll irritate his sensitive eyes when he goes outside later to head home in the dark of night. he knows the ache of every muscle being pushed to its limits well, knows the fatigue of practising when you should be preparing for bed or winding down for the night. above all else, though, he knows mingyu â his loving boyfriend who isnât as confident as he should be in his dancing, who sits opposite him with their legs folded at their knees and intertwined with each otherâs as they face each other. mingyuâs taking a swig from their shared water bottle, catching his breath as won does the same. won might be a dancer, but mingyu is an athlete â his stamina is undoubtedly better but won doesnât have to push himself quite as far, especially if heâs teaching more so than learning.Â
he knocks his knee gently intoâs mingyuâs to get his attention, offering him a subtle smile. âare you ready to go through them again?â his question is soft, hopefully gives mingyu enough room to say no if he truly isnât. reaching out to the same knee, he squeezes. âyouâre picking it up really fast, gyu. are you improving or am I just that good of a teacher?â he teases, a playful grin threatening to break through ( and it does; won can never resist, his weak will giving in only a few seconds later ). âwhich one do you feel less confident about? we can work on that a bit more and then we should go back to the dorm. itâs getting late and I need my beauty sleep.âÂ
this month is full of more questions than answers, misgivings and uncertainties that haunt him and keep him up at night. but thereâs still work to be done, and the future wonât wait for him to catch up to it. so while hongjoong may have misgivings and uncertainties that he doesnât know how to talk about to anyone in decode, he still has to put in work.
heâs not sure what it is, but the evaluations for de:code, while different, seem to fall into an easier category than when he was a trainee. perhaps itâs from experience, or the time he spent on training that things seem to fall into place - or maybe, itâs just that currently all the things that theyâre working on are strictly falling into performance categories that heâs actually good in.
it doesnât mean that he doesnât get reprimanded though. these days, hongjoongâs mind tends too wander and he tends to think a little harder than allowing himself to focus on the here and now. after another snap from the coach teaching them the choreography, hongjoong grimaces and nods his head - he gets why theyâre annoyed. he just canât seem to get his head on straight.
what if i walked away?
hongjoong sighs, his back sliding down the wall with a frown heavy on his lips. his body slumps and his head rests on kangjoonâs shoulder - rather than showing him that heâs upset, instead he pouts.  â hyung .. why is this so hard?â
as long as he canât read into the fact that this shouldnât be, and isnât, as hard as hongjoong is making it out to seem.
