She was a co-founder of the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio and United Artists. She was one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the yearly Oscar awards. She was known as "America's Sweetheart" and one of the earliest stars to be billed under her name. She was awarded the second ever Academy Award for Best Actress. She's ranked 24th in the American Film Institute's 1999 list of greatest female stars of Classic Hollywood cinema. As a co-founder of United Artists, as well as producer and star of her own films, she became the most powerful woman in Hollywood.
