You were smart.Â
Observant.Â
Capable.Â
Switched on.Â
The first to notice the smaller details with patients.Â
It was incredible how observant you wereâŚ
With everything except for when it came to social cuesâŚsuch as flirting.Â
It seemed everyone in the Pitt knew this little fact.
As they watched Dennis tirelessly try his best to flirt with you.Â
Failing miserably with each attempt.Â
Brushed off as merely friendly, or just basic niceness.Â
You just never seemed to notice. No matter how many times Dennis would approach you, nothing ever seemed to click in your mind.Â
Even when he blatantly complimented you.Â
âYou look nice today,â he had said one morning, while your eyes glanced over some charts.Â
You scrunch your nose, as you look up at him, as you remark with a light joke, âOh thanks for appreciating my 4 day old hair that totally shouldâve been washed yesterdayâÂ
âUhââ
His brows furrow in confusion, he honestly wouldnât have known. He truly thought you looked nice.Â
Well he thought you looked nice everyday.Â
He just didnât always have the courage to say so.Â
âThanks anyway, Dennis.â You nod, catching Robbyâs eye as your feet move to jump onto a new case, turning back to say, âI like your curls, suits youâ
And a wave of fluttering emotions settled in his stomach from your off handed compliment.Â
Other times when he thought words werenât enough. He tried to make his affections obvious through little actions.Â
He extends his arm instead, offering you a cup, a small nervous smile on his face, âI got you a coffeeâ
Blinking in surprise you take it in your hands, âOh that is so sweet of you, Iâll spot you one next timeâÂ
Youâd smile, delightedly soothed by the drink.Â
Once again thinking nothing of it.Â
Not realising that Dennis only bought a coffee for you.Â
Heâs left sighing in defeat at another failed attempt. Mouth downturned whilst heâs pulled away to work on an incoming trauma.Â
Donât get him wrong. He had certainly tried asking you out.Â
Itâs just thatâŚ
You never seemed to realise that was his intention.Â
You never turned him down outright either.Â
Nearing the end of a long shift, where the day felt too heavy. A day that makes you hesitate going home alone.Â
Dennis had walked up to you once more, after giving himself a little pep talk. He was ready to try his luck once more.Â
âDo you want to get a drink after work?âÂ
âOh yeah sounds good,â you nodded.Â
A smile spreading across his lips from your words, âGreatââ
Only for him to freeze as you continue, âItâll be fun hanging out with you and Trin. Definitely need a night out to relaxâ
âOh yeah, sure. TrinityâŚâ He deflates. Watching as you nod with a bright smile that he couldnât say no to.Â
Shoulderâs sagging as you walk away, âIâll just get my bag and we can plan where to go afterâ
He stands there and nods.Â
Catching Trinity by the arm, âSantos you have got to tell Y/N you canât come tonightâ
âCome where?â She asks with a raised brow.Â
âI asked her to get a drink after work, but she thinks that included you, to just hang outâ
She clicks her tongue, âBetter luck next time Huckleberryâ
âSantosââ he pleads.Â
âLook I would totally say no, but I need a night out, and Y/N is great to hang out with. So. I would totally help, but I wonât,â She offers him a tight smile, patting his back.Â
He huffs audibly.Â
Dennis just couldnât seem to crack it.Â
Couldnât seem to work out how to ask you out.Â
Maybe you just werenât interested?âŚMaybe you were just being polite?...
He honestly had no clueâŚ
Then one day.
As you were rambling on about this movie you wanted to watch. Excitement bubbling out of you as you spoke.Â
He couldnât seem to tear his eyes away from you.Â
Enthralled by you and your glee.Â
He took it as his chance.Â
As an opening.Â
âSounds like a cool movie, we should go sometime,â he offered.Â
Your eyes meet his, nodding in agreement, âThatâs a great idea Dennis, could be a fun outing with everyone.â
He swallowed thickly,Â
Not again.
âOhâuh, I meanââ
âBut should we invite everyone? Iâm not sure the film would be up everyoneâs alley, or even if theyâre free. Whoâs going to work if everyone comes and then with that in mind, people are going to miss outââ
His eyes meet Santosâ from across the room. She gives him a determined look, exaggerated miming for him to tell you.Â
He takes in a deep breath before interrupting.Â
ââY/Nâ
âYes Dennis?â your words fall short, stopping to look at him, tilting your head in question.Â
âI meant us, as in you and I. Not everyone else. Just us. Iâd like to go to the movies with you. Just youâŚas a date.âÂ
He says finally. Before tacking on as his shyness comes over, âOnly if you want toââ
You reach out, clasping his hand softly, assuredly. âIâd love toâÂ
Nodding his head, as though he couldnât believe it. The words falling from his lips quicker than he meant them to, âGreat, then itâs a dateâ
Relief washing over him as heâs finally able to ask you out successfully. Able to call you and him going out together on a date.Â
Relishing the feeling of your hand wrapped in hisâŚ
Stunned as it's pulled away, your hands covering your mouth as you realise.Â
Shock coming over you.Â
Eyes widening.Â
âHave you been flirting with me this whole time?âÂ
âMaybe, yes. Kind of.â He admits shyly.Â
âOh my god, I feel like an idiot,â you bury your head in your hands, groaning in embarrassment.Â
Dennisâ eyes softened, trying to console you, âNo donâtâmaybe I wasnât being obvious enough, I just didnât want to come off too strong,â he tried to explain.Â
Lifting your head from your hands you say apologetically, âDennis I am so sorryâfuck, I can be thick sometimesâ
He laughs softly from your mutterings. Shaking his head to try to quell your apologies.Â
âAnyways. I canât wait for our date. How does tomorrow night sound? We can get something to eat beforeâmy shout, to make up for the whole. You knowâNot knowing you were flirting, thing.â You offer. Heart pounding as you realise the boy you like happened to like you back.Â
He thought better than to argue with you, instead suggesting a compromise.Â
âHow about we split it? And call it even.â Â
Your nerves begin to settle at his words, âSounds perfect.â
And before you can talk yourself out of it. You lean up quickly, pressing a chaste kiss to his cheek before ducking away.Â
Thoughts scolding yourself for your oblivious nature.Â
Literally what the fuck?!
But as soon as you turn the corner, just out of sight, a bright smile widens across your face as you feel your heart flutter in your chest.Â
Racing from the very idea.Â
Excited and elated.Â
Leaving a stunned Dennis Whitaker standing still, hand slowly reaching up to clasp his cheek where your lips just brushed.Â
Cheeks flooding with a rising heat.Â
And across the room stands a very proud looking Santos. Who offers him a thumbs up in approval.Â
Itâs about fucking time her roommate went on a date.Â
Tomorrow night couldnât come soon enough.Â
A date that honestlyâŚ
Did not go to plan.Â
Dennis shouldâve realised it from the moment that trauma came barreling through at 6:36 pm that it was going to be a long one.Â
Only once Santos and Javadi had practically shoved you both to the locker rooms, insisting theyâd handle your hand-offs, did you both finally manage to leave the hospital.
Unfortunately by the time that happened it was well over 2 hours after you were meant to end your shift.Â
But who couldâve expected anything else?
What neither of you expected was the pouring rain that pelted down. Standing beneath the cover of the ambulance bay. Side by side.Â
Simply watching the rain pour.Â
There was no way to get to your car without being drenched.Â
And by that point there would be no way youâd get to go on your date together.Â
Dennis was beginning to lose hope. Faith flailing, it felt like his efforts to ask you out were once again were quickly being washed down the gutter.Â
But then you stood taller. Straighter. Determined.Â
âDo you trust me?âÂ
âYeah?â he replied, unsure as to what you meant.Â
Nodding at his words you slipped your hand into his.Â
âOk, on the count of three, youâre going to have to run with me,â you stated. âOneââ
âWhaââ
âTwoââ
âWaitââ
âThree!âÂ
Your feet begin to move, running through the rain as Dennis stumbles near the start, before falling into step.Â
Soon enough you reach the car park, sheltered from the rain, both panting a little out of breath.Â
Your eyes look over to him, seeing him absolutely drenched to the core, hair sticking to his forehead, clothes clinging to him.Â
Even now he looks gorgeous.Â
Eyes wide and glistening.Â
You canât help but laugh. You both were probably quite a sight, as he began to chuckle beside you.Â
Hands still clasped together.Â
âI think the movies might be out of the question,â he says finally, as your laughter dies down. A sound that made him feel as though he were floating on cloud nine.Â
âMaybe not,â you said.Â
He furrowed his brows, confused by your words.Â
âWell. Since going out is clearly out of the question,â you answered whilst pointing to both of your drenched appearances. âWe could pick up some takeout, go to mine and watch a movie there, canât promise Iâll be wearing a little black dress but hopefully my pyjamas still look half decentâ
âI like that idea a lot.â Dennis nods, a warm smile gracing his features.Â
So long as he was with you, he was sure to love it.Â
He squeezes your hand just slightly.Â
He softly murmurs, shifting closer to you, âI also, really like my hand holding yours.âÂ
âI really like it too.â You quietly reply, looking up into his eyes.
You donât know how long you mustâve lingered there.Â
Simply holding onto the feeling of his hands intertwined with yours.Â
Knowing that this was the beginning of something fun.Â
Something sweet.Â
Something perfectly imperfect.Â
Perhaps what started out rocky. A little misshapen.Â
Turns out wonderful.Â
Comfortable and warm.Â
Cosy as you nestle beside Dennis upon your couch.Â
A calm washing over you both.Â
And just maybe. Trinity doesnât see her roommate until the very next day as they begin their shift.
A Cheshire grin on her face as she sees him, walking in with you.Â
His hair a little tussled, sleep still in his eyes. And most noticeably. In the very same clothes as yesterday.Â
As he had fallen asleep beside you on your couch, fingers still interlaced with yours.Â
A small smile upon both your faces.Â
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed this fluffy little piece. I can just totally imagine Dennis fumbling over words trying to flirt with you, and being disheartened with each attempt but not giving up (respectfully of course, would be a dif story if you turned him down, he'd totally back off if you did)!
