DAY 191: I’m Livin’ for the Weekend
The theme song to THIS show popped into my head about a month ago:
Back when this thing aired every Saturday morning, I was in a weird place. As much as I enjoyed it, I was torn. Because I really HATED Disney with a passion during the preceding years.
When they weren’t clogging movie theaters with dopey, music-driven animated films, they were churning out TV shows that I wasn’t exactly a fan of.
I know, I know. It’s blasphemy to speak ill of this series, but guess what: I wasn’t a fan of Chip ‘n Dale either.
This was decades before they acquired interesting properties like Marvel & Star Wars.
However, I changed my tune in the early 2,000s because on Saturday mornings, they started spewing out really fun shit like THIS
& THIS.
Let’s just say I wasn’t made of stone. They’d completely turned me.
But back to the subject at hand.
I never missed an episode of "The Weekenders.” And the funny thing is, there was nothing really revolutionary about it. Not that there needed to be. I mean, it was still a Saturday morning cartoon.
The animation style was kind of whatever. The characters were your basic stereotypes. The stories were fairly innocuous.
But besides my weird fascination with the nerdy character of Tish,
there was always something interesting about the writing on this show that kept me coming back.
It had to do with the conversational, easily tossed-off delivery of the voice actors (which obviously starts with the way it was written).
Here’s a good example, a nice supercut of Tino’s mom giving him advice:
I don’t know. Everything about this back & forth still feels genuine to me.
And after watching this one clip, I’m sort of tempted to buy this series. But I regret seeing how much this series costs.
And that’s just the FIRST volume.
Welllllllllllll, it’s not like I’m spending my money on kids, sooooooooooo...
Shit. Now my brain’s overloading with cool cartoons from that era.
And the more I search, the more I regret that none of them are available.
Fuck me, I watched the shit out of that again.
