La Mata Wednesday Market

  While on holiday at El Bungalow 108, make a visit to the market in La Mata, it’s a great place to catch a bargain for clothing, leather, shoes, sandals, handbags, bedding, curtains. There are also stalls selling fruits and vegetables, delicatessen items, sausages and cured meats. It is very popular and gets busy; it’s best to go early to get the best local produce – but watch out for the women armed with their shopping trolleys!

The market boasts over 200 stalls and is open every Wednesday from 8 am to 1 pm From your bungalow; the market is just 5 minutes by car and 20 minutes walking distance.

  The Museum of the Sea and Salt is primarily ethnological and explains the complex relationship between the sea, salt and the people of Torrevieja. You will find a variety of attractions within the museum, amongst which of particular note, are the items made in the museum’s workshop. As well as maintaining and restoring the different museum exhibits, it produces exquisite work that reflects many aspects of city life. It is regarded as the most important museum of the city.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. On Tuesday and Sunday, it is open for half day from 10am to 2pm. On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday it is open from 10am to 2pm and again from 4.30pm to 8pm.

It’s a small museum; you will have discovered all of it within 15 to 30 minutes. Entrance is for free.

The museum houses many interesting exhibits.

Discover the Costa Blanca on a Spanish Horse

  The horse farm and riding stable “El Refugio” is located in the south of Valencia, about 4 km from El Bungalow 108. It lies on the banks of the blue lagoon of La Mata, only 1.5 km from the beach of the Mediterranean Sea.

No matter whether you are a beginner or advanced rider “El Refugio” has the right horse for everyone, and offers a broad range of riding programs. The ranch is open all year round, arrival and access to the various riding programs are possible at any time.

The farm “El Refugio” at the lagoon of La Mata has existed for more than 25 years. About 50 horses “ready to ride” live on the site, in the stables and paddocks: Cruzados, Hispano-Arab, Lusitanos, a Frisian mare and even a donkey.

Enjoy riding on the well-trained and sure-footed Spanish horses through the nature reserve of La Mata – Torrevieja. The two salt lagoons are among the most important wetlands in Europe with an exceptional climate and unique flora and fauna. It is the realm of avocets, cormorants, and flamingos. Sandy, flat trails along the lagoons are ideal for scenic gallops. The rides take you through orange and lemon groves, past vineyards, through pine forests, dunes, and reeds. On stony paths you can climb up the hills, from the saddle, you will have superb views of the lagoon, the azure blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the sharply drawn silhouette of the mountains in the backcountry.

Spanish Galleon "Santisima Trinidad" at Alicante Port

  This ship, replica of the original, is open to the public, and a place to eat and drink in interesting surroundings. Seating areas are surrounded by tableaux showing life aboard in the 1700s, which was fairly comfortable for officers, but brutal for the serving men. There are some excellent oil paintings and display cases which also add ‘flavour’ to the visit.

For naval buffs, the details of the original vessel are fascinating. It was launched from the Havana naval yard in 1769, after two years construction and a cost of 40,000 gold ducats (about £3 million). At that time, it was the largest and most heavily armored warship afloat, almost twice the size of Nelson’s flagship, the Victory.

The between-decks are high enough to allow the gunners to stand upright – something the men on the Victory couldn’t do. It was the Spanish flagship in the American War of Independence, supporting the US colonies against Britain. It fought successfully in several campaigns, but its demise came in the battle of Trafalgar under the command of the wonderfully named Baltasar Hidalgo Cisneros. It was severely damaged in the battle, with 200 sailors killed and more than 100 injured. It was finally captured by the British who elected to haul it to their port in Gibraltar. The great ship succumbed to its own injuries and sank 25 miles south of Cadiz, where all attempts to salvage it failed. However, most of the artillery pieces were brought up and displayed in Caraca’s naval dockyard in Cadiz.

The replica in Alicante Marina gives a real feel for the original ship – with its huge size, spaciousness, the quality of the wood panelling and interiors. The large state rooms in the stern offered Officers and Masters accommodation, meeting facilities and areas for their leisure and dining.

Jardín de las Naciones - Nations Garden Park

  Nations Garden (Jardín de las Naciones) is a lovely peaceful park, despite being in quite close proximity to a busy road. It is one of the largest green areas in the city of Torrevieja at nearly 40,000 square meters. It is kept very clean and tidy and the plants and trees are very well taken care of. It has lots of water features and a lake that is in the shape of the European continent, with little bridges that you can walk over and around.

The variety of birds, including ducks and peacocks add to the peacefulness of the park. It is a fun place to visit during the day, you can pack a picnic and spend quite a bit of time there, having a nice walk around, maybe a shot on one of the rental boats and kids will love playing in the children’s play area, where they will find a giant dragon slide where they can slide down the dragons back. There are plenty of seating and shaded areas.

It’s also a nice park to visit in the latter part of a day, for a lovely evening stroll while enjoying the relaxing sounds of the birds.

The park is open daily from 10am to 9.30pm. It has sanitary facilities on site.
