He posted the recently completed portrait of the 23 year old who was killed tragically after an encounter with the police on facebook accompanied by the heartbreaking details. This painting ‘letter to my Mum’ by David Jon Kassan on display as part of the BP portrait award 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery has me absolutely captivated!! Although the artist offered his mother a painted portrait of her grandson in return for modeling she was hard to convince of posing for this art work. The detailed painting of her hands, facial features, the half opened mouth, the downward gaze drew me in. The Hebrew on the wall reads: ‘Dear Mom; This painting is my way to spend more time with you; My way to meditate on our life together; And all of the earliest memories I have from you’. In the competition this portrait has won third price. From the overall intriguing exhibition it captivated me the most. The painting invites to spend time with the Artist’s mother, getting to know her better. Which apparently proves more difficult in real life. The show continues until 21 September 2014.
