Going to school wasn't the worst, but definitely not the best. Especially for girls. We were always looked down upon for being 'less smart than their male counterparts'. They taught us more about etiquette and manners and boring shit like that. Lots of the time I would hear boys laugh in the school yard about how girls shouldn't even go to school, or go to a school that would teach us how to do laundry and wash dishes. What utter scum.
When I bumped into David he was very different. He was polite and kind and treated me like human being. He was a nice breath of fresh air, and I wanted more. I knew him to be in my advanced English class and Math. Boy was he smart, but so was I. I think he noticed I was in a few of his classes and chose to sit by me. We had a small chat about books we liked and how our lives at home were. He was a sweet boy unlike the ones I've seen and met before.
So that lead me to tell my best friend about him. She told me that I was starting to fancy him but I doubt that. I barely know the guy!
"You totally fancy him!" (F/n) squealed with a giant grin. "I better be a brides maid!"
"Wha!" I exclaimed in embarrassment. "No! (F/n)! I only talk to him in classes, and he probably only sees me in a friendly manner anyways."
"We can change that," She said wiggling her eyebrows.
"You suck," I said clearing all expressions from my face.
"Oh come on," She said rolling her eyes playfully. "I just want to help."
"Yeah yeah," I sighed. "You know, I'm okay with just being friends."
She just shook her head as the bell rung, "David Jacobs huh, I think he's in my next class."
I felt my face pale not knowing what she would do. Maybe she's just scaring me. Before I could warn her not to she left me standing alone in the schools garden. I made my way to my next class, my mind elsewhere. Would David and I ever get together? Would he ever like me like that? What would it be like dating him?
My waking thoughts were consumed of just David and I. The possibilities, the romance that seemed  nonexistent, how good of a person he seemed to be. The next day when David sat next to me there seemed to be something on his mind.
"Hey David," I said with a smile closing my book.
He just stared at me for a few seconds before snapping out of his thoughts, "Oh, hey." I furrowed my eyebrows, 'Does he want me to leave him alone?' Probably, so I opened my book and started to read leaving David to his thoughts. I may like to talk to him, but I know when to stop. I was only able to read a few pages before David passed me a note. I looked at him with curiosity and opened it.
It read:
Your friend told me you needed some tutoring with math, I could help you.
I felt my eyes widen and blush a bit. So she did talk to him. I looked at the clock noticing that class will start soon so I quickly scribbled down my reply.
Yeah, some of it was kind of confusing. How about this Saturday? At noon?
I passed him back the note and I noticed he seemed extremely nervous. He scanned it quickly and let out a sigh of relief. A grin took over his features as he wrote. Passing it to me it read:
Sounds good. We could go to my place, I can pick you up. What's your address?
I wrote down my address and just like that, a study was planned. The week seemed to pass quickly after that exchange. David hung out with me more and more frequently. He would walk me to some of my different classes  and he would walk me home. 'Just so I know the way' Was one of his many excuses. Once Saturday rolled around I was made sure to dress in somewhat casual, yet still presentable garment. A baby blue skirt with a white lacy top.
A knock was heard at my door and it seemed like I wasn't quick enough to answer it, for there was my mom and David standing there talking. I shyly approached the two as my mom was questioning him and he looked extremely nervous once again.
"Stop interrogating him mother," I said sternly.
"I just want to make sure this young man has the best of intentions with you," My mother responded crossing her arms.
"He's just going to help me study," I sighed out as my mama moved out of the way.
"Make sure you're back here before dinner you hear me?" She asked. "I don't want to make food for two only for it to go to waste."
I nodded in understanding, "Of course mama." I kissed her cheek and left with David to his house.
"That was scary," He said letting out a breath. This caused me to laugh. When we got to his house we were the only ones there. We studied, him explaining further how to do some of the stuff we learned earlier. Then his family came home. We were in the kitchen so they saw us right away.
His little brother, which I think he said his name was Les, ran over to us with a giant smile, "You're the girl Davey won't stop talkin about!" My eyes widened and I felt my cheeks heat up.
"U-uhm," I stuttered out not knowing how to reply.
"Les!" David whispered harshly.
"It's alright," I said with a slight laugh. His sister, which I forgot her name sorry, laughed too.
"Come on Les," She said with a smile, "Let's let them continue studying." His parents walked in to introduce themselves.
"I'm Mrs. Jacobs and this is my husband," She said politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you dear."
"The pleasure is all mine Mrs. Jacobs," I smiled. "My name is (y/n) (l/n)." They then left to the small living room leaving me and David slightly alone. We couldn't seem to focus on our work anymore and we decided to take a break, David helping me onto the fire escape. We stared out at the sky breathing in the fresh air. I noticed it was started getting late and mentioned to David I should head home.
"I'll walk you there," He said while helping me back into his apartment. I nodded with a smile as we packed up our stuff. Les started to complain saying how 'Davey' hogged me the entire time and that he wanted to play with me too. Sarah, I learned her name was, told him that next time he would be able to. We bid his parents goodbye and we left off to my house.
"The stars look very pretty," I mumbled out as we walked down a cobblestone street. "Too bad the lights of the city block them."
"The city lights let some shine brighter," He muttered under his breath but I heard him. I looked at him in confusion and I notice he was blushing.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I-I, uh," He stuttered out. "You look beautiful and the l-light uh..." I blushed and couldn't help but let out a small giggle.
"Y-you happen to look handsome," I replied tucking a stray hair behind my ear.
Once we got to my house I stopped before entering. I turned to David and smiled shyly.
"Thank you Davey," I said with a slight smirk. I leaned on my tip toes and gave him a light peck on the lips before bolting into my house. I looked out my window to see a stunned Davey standing there. Then a love sick smile rested on his face and I knew that I did the right thing. He slowly left with a bit of a pip in his step.

One day ago, Davey Jacobs was walking on air. The strike had just been started and they just needed to spread the word to the other newsies in New York. He had his eye on the most amazing newsie he had met in the two days he had been working there, and you just happened to feel the same way.
But that was before the strike had actually started. That was before Les had a broken arm and Davey was bleeding so bad he passed out and had to be carried back to the Lodge. That was before the other news boys were battered and bruised, worse than he was. That was before Crutchie was dragged off to the refuge and Jack was missing. That was before newsies couldnât walk. That was before he had to stay in the Lodge so his mom wouldnât freak out about his injuries and forbid him from working as a newsie.
So here he lay, trying to catch some sleep for once, next to you. You were forbidden from going to the strike, being one of the younger newsies, but that didnât stop you. He had pulled you away from fights with the Delanceyâs, earning blows to the face. You continued to fight with the Delanceyâs for hurting Davey. It was a continuous circle, until the bulls came. Newsies were dragged away. Davey tossed and turned as he heard Crutchie yelling for Jack.
Then the dream changed, and it wasnât Crutchie being pulled away, it was Les. He was crying, begging for someone, for Davey, for his mother, but Davey was lying on the concrete, passed out.
You felt the mattress beneath you move, and you turned over to Davey, who was writing back and forth, tears in his eyes. You shot up and moved closer to him. The tall boy continued to sleep, turning violently. You softly put your hand on his shoulder and shook him a little bit. He shot up and looked at you.
âIs Les here? Please tell me it was all a dream.â
âLes is still hereâŚ.Dave, are you alright?â
âI canât stop dreaming about what happened. It replays in my mind, the Delanceyâs hurting you, the bulls taking away Crutchie, and then it changes. They arenât taking away Crutchie, theyâre taking away Les...when you woke me, they were about to take you away,â he wrapped his arms around you. âBut youâre here. Youâre not okay.â
You snuggled into his arms, his hand caressed your face, touching the black eye and busted lip.
âIâm okay Davey, I promise. But you...youâre not alright. Not just physically, but up in here too,â
You tapped on his head a little bit, earning a smile from Davey, even if it was too dark to see.
âI canât help thinking that this was all my faultâŚ.I brought up the strike and suggested we tell Pulitzer and that we go through it,â he said all these things, blaming himself, through hard, deep breaths.
You put your hands on his face.
âDavey...hey, hey, hey, calm down. They canât hurt you anymore. By the time the strike is over, the Delanceyâs will be too scared to hurt us, and the bulls and Snyder, we wonât have to worry about them. Second of all, none of this, the strike, everybodies injuries, Crutchie going to the Refuge, none of this is your fault.â
Davey took a deep breath, slowly, surely, trying to regain total calmness. His hands grabbed yours from his face and held them close to his chest.
âThank you, (Y/N)....â you felt him lean in closer to you, his breath coming closer and closer.
His nose bumped into yours, and his forehead stayed against yours.
âYou can kiss me...if you want toâŚâ
âI want to,â he whispers against your lips.
His lips press against yours, and you kiss back, even though it hurts a little bit. He pulls back, remembering your lip.
âIâm sorry,â
âItâs all good Davey,â you mutter, pressing one more kiss to his lips. âWe need to go to sleep.â
You lay down and Davey wraps his arms around you and pulls you close to him, your head resting against his chest, and you both peacefully fall asleep.

The beloved AO3 link!
You and David had joined the newsboys at the same time to support your families, and unsaid, to support each other. You had always been around the Jacobs family to help David with Les and in turn, he helped you with your school work. Given, he wasnât the best at asking for help, yet somehow you were always there when he needed it, whether he knew it or not.
The two of you had actually met in one of those situations.
He was trying to bring a chest inside his house, but he wasnât really succeeding. You had been walking by, on your way home from picking up some groceries for your parents when you saw him struggling. You had started to help and when the chest finally started to move, he looked up and noticed you.
âExcuse me, who are you?â He asked, ever so polite, even at a young age.
âIâm (Y/N)! Who're you?â
âMy mother told me not to talk to strangers.â He mumbled.Â
âBut you talked to me first!â You pointed out.
âWellâŚâ He started, before you cut him off.
âYou know my name now, so we're not strangers. Plus, I'm helping you move this thing!âÂ
âBut, why?âÂ
âYou looked like you needed help.â You shrugged. He looked pensive for a moment, eyeing the chest as well as you.Â
âOh. Well, my nameâs David. And I don't need your help.â He finally said, irritated.
âItâs nice to meet you David!â You said, putting down your end of the chest to stick out your hand for a handshake, dismissing his annoyance with you.
Reluctantly, he put his end down to take your hand in his.Â
"It's nice to meet you, (Y/N)."
â(Y/N). (Y/N), (Y/N)!â
You were brought back from the memory by the same boy it was about. David was waving his hand in front of you face
âYeah David?â You said, shaking your head.
âYou looked lost in thought, and I didnât want us to be late to the newsstand.â
âSorry, sorry, I was just thinking about how we first met. Whatâs the word? Remi-?â
âReminiscing.â
âThanks.â
âSure, now come on, we gotta go.â He says, before shaking his own head.Â
You hadnât realized you had stopped until he pointed it out. Though once he did, you grabbed his hand and ran, dragging David through the streets behind you. Unbeknownst to you though, him and physical contact did not pair well, and left him a blushing mess.
By the time you had reached the newstand, there was already a line forming. You had managed to squeeze in before anyone else could, pulling David along with you. You were a team after all. You let go of his hand and turned to face him while others were getting their papers.
âIsnât this exciting? We actually get to work. We get to be a part of this.â You whispered, walking backwards as the line moved forward.
âI donât understand how this is all that exciting to you. Weâre just selling newspapers.â He sighs.Â
âDavid weâre not ju-â
You interrupted by a slam of something hitting the post behind you. You were so excited that you hadnât realized it was your turn to take some papers.Â
âAh, a new kid. Good to see a fresh face 'round all of these rats.â A rather greasy looking man said.
"Uh, two new faces actually." You say, trying to divide the attention from the man between you and David, pulling him up next to you.
Chatter began to spread around the area. New people? Kids they hadn't seen before? The newsies seemed to be a tight-knit group to you and after seeing anyone new, they all seemed a bit shocked. Some others you could see had a mischievous look to them. You made a mental note to try to stick with David.Â
âI-Iâll take twenty papers please.â You stutter out, making yourself small.
âOoh, and manners, I like you already.â He said, smiling at you. You could feel David at your side, causing you to relax.
You heard some of the other boys calling him weasel, you could see why. You never wanted to be in a 100 foot radius of him ever again.Â
â20 for the new kid. Now letâs see the dime?â
âWe can pay for them after we sell them, canât we?â David asked, jumping into the conversation, putting his arm around you.
âCash up-front kid.â
âBut whatever we donât sell you buy back right?â He asks, incredulously.
âDavid, itâs fine.â You said, trying to calm him down.Â
âHere you go.â You gave the man a dime and took your twenty papers, leaving the safety of David's arms.
David did the same, yet, something was wrong. He had only gotten nineteen. He bickered with the weasel, who you had come to learn was named Wiesel, for a bit longer before another boy came over to settle the dispute. As he walked past he gave you a wink.
He was a good deal taller than you were, so you turned your head down to face your feet, in hopes he wouldnât see your blush. You werenât really used to all of this attention. You looked back up to hear that the boy was offering you both fifty more papers. Which seemed a bit outrageous to you.Â
âWe can do fine on our own thank you very much. We donât even know who you are.â You straightened up in hopes of seeming more confident, walking back to David's side.Â
âThis here is Jack Kelly, how couldya not have heard of him?â A boy with a crutch said, coming up to stand next to 'Jack Kelly'.
âHows about I show the both of youse the ropes here, eh?â He says, elbowing the boy with the Crutch while eyeing you both up and down.
âWhy are you helping us?â David asked him, with that same tone he had used years ago with you.
âItâs ya first day here, and I thinks the little kiddo here,â Jack made his way to your other side, bringing his arm around your shoulders, looking David in the eyes, âcould get ahead with the right tricks that I could teach ya.â
âThe little kid here? Has a name you know. And really isn't so little.â You took his arm from around your shoulder and forcefully poked him in the chest, pushing him a slight bit away from you so you could look up at him. He looked surprised, as if he had never been rejected before.
âItâs (Y/N). This is David. You should at least learn our names before you teach us anything.â
âWell then, Vests, Davey, follow me and Iâll getcha all set up.â He started walking away from you, not waiting for you to follow. You and David shared a look. You had to admit, Jack had some gusto, it made sense that all the other boys seemed to stop and listen when he spoke.Â
"Vests?" You asked, looking at your outfit. You guessed your vest stood out.
âDavey?â He asked, confusion all over his face.
"Must be easier for him to remember." You shrugged. You then ran off to catch up with Jack, and turned around to see David, no, Davey, in a trance.
âCâmon Davey! Donât you love learning?â You shouted at him, your smile wide. That seemed to shake him from his trance and he began running to catch up. Once you were both caught up, Jack started explaining things.Â
âSo first things first, you gotta choose a sellin' spot to sell ya papes. You choose a bad one, youse ain't gonna end up makin' a lot, and youâll hafta eat the papes. But, lucky for you two, s'early enough that there are still a few good spots left.â He took you to a corner that wasnât all that lively, but from what you could see, there seemed to be a lot of shops and houses around here.Â
âWow. You know, I donât think Iâve ever been to this part of New York.â
âJust wait doll, hang with us for a while youâll getta see a lotta stuff.â Jack winked at you again before someone started to come up to you.
âWatch this,â Jack whispered to you and Davey, as he put on a smile,â'Suces me maâam, but can I interest you in todayâs morning paper. Itâs all about creatures prowlin' 'round in the night of New York City. If ya need anyone to protect, just call for Jack.â He winked as they exchanged money. But as soon as she bought the paper and left blushing, Jack dropped the smile and sincerity.Â
âSee? Easy as pie. So for you Vests, I would suggest that ever so sweet flattery. For Davey, Iâmna put what I hope's a big brain to work. Like so.â
Jack began shouting out a headline, too loud for you to figure out was he was saying.Â
âCome get it right here! Terrified flight from burninâ inferno!â He shouted over and over again. Soon enough, a man walked up and took the paper from Jack, handing him some change.Â
âYou want me to lie?â Davey asked in exasperation.
âYou do whatcha gotta do here.â Jack shrugged, âNow, your turn.âÂ
In the time he had given you both demonstrations, more people had filled the street. Women walking around to buy groceries for their families. Men walking around to go to meetings and suit shops and what not. You could see Daveyâs brain looking for ways to sell papers without having to lie, the scowl on his face deepening as he thought. If you were to be honest, you werenât sure what else he was supposed to do. You left him to his thinking to try and sell some of your own papers, which was in actuality, easier done then said. Sometimes you would only need to give someone a look and they'd be racing over to talk to you. You sold them a paper and sent them on their way, only able to entertain them for so long. Soon enough, you had sold all of your papers and it wasnât even midday.Â
âWow, you really are a natural at this arenâtcha?â Jack asked, suddenly appearing at your side, arm around your shoulder. You weren't quite sure if this was him flirting or simply his normal.Â
âWell, Iâm not exactly that sure. I was just doing what you told me to do. It actually tires me out.âÂ
âOh yeah, sellin twenty papes must make ya real tired.â He says, sarcasm evident.
âItâs not the number that tires me, but selling them itself. Iâve never gotten this much attention from anyone. Itâs all new to me and Iâm actually really glad youâre helping me and Davey.âÂ
âI do what I can. Itâs the least I can do for new newsies.â He says, directing you to a bench.
âWell still, I appreciate it. I'm sure Davey does too." You say, as both of you turn to look back over to Davey, who still had the majority of his papers in his bag. He looked so concerned and sort of angry, probably at himself for having trouble selling papers. You decided to give him a reprieve by walking up to talk to him, saying goodbye to Jack.Â
"I'll see you tomorrow, won't I?" Jack asked.
"Course you will, I'm a newsies after all."
Davey had been getting more and more frustrated as time had passed. He saw you selling papers with ease, and wondered what he was doing wrong. Everything came so effortlessly to you, you were so adaptable, persistent too. You had dealt with him all these years, his dissatisfaction when he couldn't get something right on the first try, his bitterness when he didn't understand something, his standoffish-ness. You stayed by his side through it. And even now, you were helping him support his family so that Les could stay in school. And here you were, walking up to him and pulling him out of his spiral.
"Hey (Y/N)." He says, downcast.
âDavey, how about we take a break and go get something to eat at your house. Then we can come back and start fresh. I can even help you sell some papers.â You offer.
âYeah, youâre right. I think I need a break. Thanks (Y/N).â He says, sighing.
âHey, who knows you better than I do?â You smile.
âNobody.â
âThatâs right."Â
As the two of you walked back to Davey's house, neither of you spoke. You didn't need to, the silence was comfortable, at least, comfortable on your end. On Davey's however, the silence was only external, with the thoughts in Daveyâs mind racing.
I really donât understand, why am I having such a hard time selling papers? Is it because Iâve been so distracted today? Because I've been frustrated half the time and don't even know why? If that's the reason, what's the source? Could it be (Y/N)? I mean, not directly because of (Y/N), but all these interactions they're having. The way some of those other guys were staring at them earlier, it made me sick. And Jack? What is he playing at? Flirting with (Y/N) and then encouraging (Y/N) to flirt with others. Why is this making me upset? It must be Jack then, it has to be. He just rubs me the wrong way, and he's a bad influence! And (Y/N) doesn't even seem to realize it. How could they let him do that to them, to let him treat them like that. Outrageous.Â
He had just finished his train of though as you both arrived at Daveyâs house. You entered and went into the kitchen to find Daveyâs mother.Â
âOh hello dears. It seems a bit early to see you back.â Mrs. Jacobs greeted you.
âItâs nothing to worry about Mrs. Jacobs. We stopped by in hopes that we could have something to eat.â You said, falling into a rhythm with her to prepare lunch.
âWell, we have a bit of leftover bread, most likely enough for the both of you. And while Iâm trying to make that butter last as long as possible, take as much as you like.â She said.Â
âThank you mother.â Davey said, as he grabbed two cups and filled them up with water from the sink, setting them down at the table. You joined him at the table carrying a plate with the bread and butter. You sat across from him at the table and the two of you began to eat.Â
âYou know David, you donât look too well. Maybe you should go rest.â His mother suggested.
âI canât do that. If I rest I wonât be able to sell the rest of my papers.â He rebutted.
âYour motherâs right Davey. You should rest. I can sell the rest of the papers for you.â You agreed.
âNo, (Y/N), you donât need t-â
âDavid Jacobs give me your papers this instant.â You stated firmly.
He resigned himself to handing his papers over to you. You put them in your bag, finishing your bread before heading out and saying goodbye to the Jacobs.Â
Mrs. Jacobs had joined Davey as he was fiddling with his cup.
âSo, David, tell me, whatâs got you all worked up.â She said.
âMother I have no idea as to what youâre talking about.âÂ
âThereâs something upsetting you and it isnât good to bottle it up inside.â
âHow do you know something's wrong?â
âMotherâs intuition sweet heart. So. What is it?â
âItâs just, Iâve been wound up and angry today and Iâm not sure why, and I think it has to do with (Y/N) and this newsie, Jack.â
âOf course.â She said, nodding her head.
âEarlier today, everyone was looking, gawking at them like they were some freak of nature, as if they had never seen a person before. And then this guy Jack was flirting with them and touching them and while we were selling papes he encouraged them to flirt with everyone, putting them outside of their comfort zone and into the spotlight.â He rambled.
âIt sounds to me that someone is jealous.â
âIâm not jealous, Iâm worried about them.â
âYou care about them. And youâre not used to not being the center of their attention. It's natural.â
âOh please, Iâm perfectly fine not being the center of their attention.â
âHow do you feel that they're going back to sell papers, by themself, or possibly with the Jack boy you mentioned?â
âIâm fine.â He strained.
âYou donât sound fine to me mister. Go get some rest and think about it when you get up."Â
"Mother I'm fine. Please."
"David, go take a nap, and when you wake up you can help Les with his homework."Â
"Fine." He says, bringing himself to his room, only to stew in his angry thoughts.

(Y/N) Kelly, Jack Kellyâs infamous little sister. You had always wanted to be a newsie, to go sell papes and have fun with the boys Jack loved so much. Jack had always been really protective of you, and the strike had just ended, so it took a little bit of convincingâŚ.but here you were, about to start your first day.
The boys all knew about you-Jack was always proud of his kid sister, so when you showed up with him, the boys all surrounded you. You had already met Crutchie, as he was one of Jackâs best friends, and you had seen the boys around the city, just never connecting names with faces.
Crutchie introduced you to every single boy that was there, except for the boy staying out of the crowd. He was tall, much taller than Jack. He had dark hair and hazel eyes.
Crutchie noticed you staring at the boy.
âThatâs Davey, go talk to him.â he said, nudging you with his crutch.
You walked up to Davey and held out your hand.
âDavey, itâs nice to meet you,â you grinned. âIâm (Y/N), but I know you knew that.â
âNice to meet you (Y/N),â the brunette said, shaking your hand with a firm grip.
âDavey, will you be a pal, and be (Y/N)âs sellinâ partner for da day? Show her da ropes and such...Iâd do it myself, butâŚ.â Jackâs voice drowned out.
âOf course Jack.â
You bought your papes and Davey showed you where he usually selled.
âIâm really surprised Jack wasnât more protective of me...Iâd expect him to keep me away from all da boys.â you told Davey.
âWell, Iâd understand if he had asked Race or Romeo to be your selling partner. But Iâm a good friend of your brotherâs, he probably trusts me enough to make sure youâre safe, and not to flirt with you.â
The two of you sold until lunch, when you went to lunch with Les.
Davey was ordering while Les talked to you.
âIâm surprised Davey is so calm around ya (Y/N). Heâs reallyâŚ.how do I put this kindly, heâs awkward around girls. He gets all red, and stutters a lot. Pretty funny if weâre beinâ honest.â
You laughed at Lesâs comment as Davey returned with some food.
You finished the food and then continued to sell papes until late. Davey walked you to the lodge, where Jack said you could stay know that you were an officially selling papes.
âThanks for walkinâ me back, Davey. Jackâll be grateful that ya made sure I had no run ins with da Delanceyâs.â
âItâs my pleasure.â Davey responded.
Under the faint light of the moon, you could see a light flush on his cheeks. Maybe thatâs what Les was talking about.
You arrived at the lodge, and it was quiet. Davey said nothing, and quickly walked off, leaving you at the doorstep by yourself.
You decided to go up to Jackâs âpenthouseâ and to talk to him about Davey.
âGood eveninâ (Y/N). Have a good first day sellinâ, doll?â Race said, taking your hand into his and pressing a kiss against your knuckles.
Romeo ran up and took the other hand and did the same.
âRacer! Elmer! Leave my sister alone.â Jack said, making the boys jump and leave you alone.
âThanks Jack.â you stated sarcastically, walking over to Jack and lightly punching him in the arm.
The two of you went up to the rooftop, where Crutchie already was fast asleep.
âJack, are Davey and ya good friends?â you asked.
âIâd say we are...why?â he asked suspiciously.
âI just...I think..â
â(Y/N), I know where this is going. Daveyâs a great guy, but Iâd prefer that if you got feelins for any of da boys in da group, not him. In fact, not any of da boys. Just stay away from boys. Theyâre awful.â
âJack, youâre a boyâŚ.â
âI know and Iâve been livinâ with a lot of boys for a long time. I know how awful these boys can be. I justâŚ.I donât want ya gettinâ hurt. Imagine how thatâd be at workâŚ.I feel like that if any of these boys hurt you, I couldnât be friends with them.â
âJack, I wonât get hurt I promiseâŚ..but Davey, doesnât seem like da kind of guy that is a heartbreaker.â
âWell, Daveyâs a different form of heartbreaker. He canât express his feelins that well...he gets really uncomfortable around girls, especially ones that he likes. I could tell that he liked you from da minute you walked up. His eyes lit up, (Y/N), Iâve never seen him like that. Itâs obvious, he couldnât even talk to you the first five minutes you were there.â
âJack, youâre crazy. Thereâs no way that Davey likes me. He was so comfortable with me, and held some good conversations.â
â(Y/N), youâre da crazy one.â
As you tried to sleep, Jackâs words rang through your brain. Thereâs no way that Davey liked youâŚ.youâre just a girl, a normal girl...whoâs older brother was very protective. And he really did hold the conversation well, not blushing and stuttering like Les saidâŚ.
Thereâs no way Jack was right.
The next morning, Jack set off early to meet with Davey. You were fast asleep, and he didnât want to wake you. The circulation bell could do that, or Crutchie.
He got dressed and walked over to the Jacobs, knocking on the door softly.
Davey opened the door, half awake.
âJack, what are you doing here?â
âYou like her donât yaâŚ.donât ya Davey?â Jack smirked.
âWho, Jack?â Davey started to turn pink.
âMy kid sister, who do ya think? Câmon, you can tell me.â
âIâŚ..I...Jack, please donât hurt me.â Davey started to flinch, and looked down at his feet.
âWhy would I hurt ya Davey? Ya just have to promise me one thing, donât hurt her,â Jack welcomed himself in. âDavey, sheâs so oblivious to ya. She definitely likes you.â
Davey looked up from his feet.
âShe...you think she does?â
âI think. She asked me about ya last night. I personally told her, donât go for it. Donât go for any of da boys. I canât have her getting hurt. Promise me...promise me Davey, if ya tell her that ya like her like that, that ya wonât hurt her. Promise me ya wonât let her get hurt. âCause if she does, than I might just have to hurt ya.â
âI promise Jack. I would never do a thing to hurt her or to put her in harmâs way.â
Jack left the house and started towards back to the lodge, knowing by the time heâd make it there, youâd be mad that he left without a word.
Meanwhile, Davey smiled and thought of how today at work would be different, now that he had Jackâs blessing.
âJack Kelly! Ya canât just leave without a word like that. Ya know, da boys told me ya do that a lot. Just leave! Like when ya didnât come visit me for days after da strike started! Ya canât do that to people!â you yelled as you saw Jack walking towards the lodge.
âIâm sorry (Y/N)....â he said smirking. âTo make up for it, I think youâll like work today.â
âWhat did ya do? Do I even want to know?â you questioned.
âYouâll see.â
You walked with the boys and Jack to the paper stand, where Les and Davey stood waiting. The minute Davey saw you, his eyes lit up and he smiled ear to ear. Les looked up and started to say something, and immediately Davey covered his mouth and glared at the boy, causing you to snicker. All the boys noticed something, Davey liked you, and you liked Davey. As they all realized this, they got the same collective awe in their face, gasping a little bit one by one.
You howeverâŚ..you were oblivious to everything and didnât even notice all the boys reactions.
You bought your papes and waited for Davey to get his.
Les ran up to you with a toothy grin on his face.
âDavey said that he thinks youâre a doll.â he said, then ran back to Jack, who was selling with him.
You were confused and in awe, but smiled at Lesâs joke.
âWhatâs got you smiling, (Y/N)?â Davey said as he approached you.
âNothinâ, just Les.â you replied.
You looked up at the tall brunette, who was wearing the same smile as before. His cheeks were pink and his eyes glittered a bit.
âAh Les, always putting smiles on girls faces.â Davey said.
You smiled and walked with Davey to his selling spot, and worked for the rest of the day, yelling fake headlines like Jack had taught you. Jack had taught you the perfect way to sell papes, saying that Davey had too much integrity to fake a headline and lie to the people...and after meeting Davey, you had to agree.
Hours passed, and it was time to go back to the lodge. Davey said that he would walk you back again.
The walk back was quiet, but a different kind of quiet. Halfway through the stroll, you felt Davey started to move closer to you, slowly moving his hand towards yours, and finally, you felt his fingers intertwine with yours. You looked up at him, but could only make out his silhouette.
While this was a big deal to you, you believed it meant nothing to Davey. Maybe he wasnât as quiet and awkward around girls as Les and Jack said. Maybe this was something that he did a lot.
You approached the lodge, and silently wished for more time with Davey. At the door, he stood, holding your hand in his.
The door opened and Elmer, JoJo, Race and Albert popped their heads out.
âWeâve been waitinâ all night for ya to come back with our darlinâ doll (Y/N). Ya treat her good, make sure no Delanceyâs were after her?â Race questioned, getting in between you and Race.
âYes Race, I made sure no Delanceyâs were going after her.â Davey said, exasperated.
âWell thenâŚ.ya gonna kiss her or what?â Elmer said.
In the dim light, Davey went red, and you couldnât deny that you were equally as red.
âAre you that oblivious (Y/N)? Câmon Davey told likes ya.â JoJo said.
âAnd (Y/N) feels da same way âbout you Davey.â Albert said matter of factly.
By some miracle, Jack showed up, stopping the four boys from heckling you any longer.
âCâmon ya four, get outta here. Leave âem alone!â Jack said.
The four boys walked back into the lodge, and Jack closed the door, leaving you and Davey alone in the dark.
âIs...is that true Davey?â you said.
You looked up at him, not seeing him as well as you did when the door was open, but you could see him moving closer to you.
âYeah...it is,â he replied. âIs...is it true...for you?â
âYeah, it is.â you smirked.
He looked down at you, and you felt his hands on the small of your back. You stood on your toes, knowing that youâd have to make the move if you really wanted anything else to happen. Your face got closer to his, and pressed your lips on his, quickly pecking him, then opening the door and rushing in, closing it fast.
Jack was on the other side of the door, waiting for you to come back in. You leaned against the door and smiled.

Davey was new to school, and the minute he walked into his math class, his eyes were on you. He felt his cheeks flush, and a shy smile started to form as he sat behind you.
The boy had never been good with the whole âgirlâ thing. He didnât have a whole lot of luck with love. By the time he was thirteen, he decided that it might just be a good idea to give up the whole idea altogether. He decided to focus on school more, especially math. He was quite good at math.
But looking at you, maybe he could give that whole love thing another try.
âDo you have an eraser?â you asked this new boy that sat behind you.
He turned around, a slight pink in his cheeks. His eyes were filled with light when your eyes locked.
âI would love toâŚâ the boy said.
You gave a look of confusion and he looked down, you becoming even more confused, and turned around.
You went back to work, and an eraser plopped on your desk. You looked back to see the new boy smiling at you.
âThanks. Iâm (Y/N).â you said to him.
âIâm Davey.â
âNice to meet you Davey.â
He quickly turned around again.
Thank you math for introducing me to this girl, Davey thought to himself.
You turned around and pointed to the board where a question sat, waiting for everybody in the class to answer it individually.
âIs it two?â you questioned Davey, who you thought looked very smart.
âYes!â he beamed.
You turned around wondering who this dorky, smart...but cute guy was and where he came from.
Davey continued to think to himself, about how math was such a good thing. This math class was a good thing, if only he was as good at love as he was with math. Oh...and how gorgeous you were.
The two of you continued to work on the problems the teacher assigned individually, until he said that you could work with a partner. You immediately turned around to Davey, hoping he could help you understand this difficult thing called math.
âTwo over zero is undefined!â the both of you said together when you finished a problem.
âJinx!â you smirked at him.
He just laughed.
Davey watched as you smiled and casually tossed your hair over your shoulder, than went back to work.

AU:Â âI broke your nose at a mosh pitâ
Warnings: cheesiness, blood and alcohol
Word Count: 392
It was a blur. Too much alcohol, your friends hyping you up. The mosh pit started to form and you immediately shot to the center.
The club was blasting music. There was no way anybody was sober. You continued to jump around and some of your friends were hesitant about the mosh pit.
You motioned for them to come closer.
They knew you, and that there was no way out of the mosh pit, and they knew that they wouldnât be able to get you out for a while.
They joined you in the center, and jumped around with you. You tried to dancing in the tight space when you heard a crack.
âThat canât be good.â one of your friends said.
You spun around and saw a tall boy holding onto his nose.
âOh my, Iâm so sorry.â
Two of his friends join his side.
âItâs all good. Complete accident ya know?â he slightly chuckled.
Blood was seeping through his fingers.
âOh my gosh. Here, sit down.â you said.
His friends and you walked alongside him to a table. You grabbed some napkins and gave them to the boy.
âHey, Specs, do you want to check this out.â one of his friends said.
Another one of his friends ran over and made the boy move his hand away from his nose.
âThis is Davey by the way.â his other friend said, pointing to the boy.
â(Y/N).â
After a short inspection, Specs moved away from Davey.
âThereâs a possibility that itâs broken, but we wonât know until we go to the doctor. Come on Dave.â
âLet me come with. Itâs my fault this happened.â
So you joined the four boys to the hospital.
You learned on the way that one of the boys was Jack and the other was Daveyâs little brother, Les.
In the waiting room, you sat by Davey.
âListen, Davey, Iâm so sorry that this happened.â
âNo, itâs all good (Y/N). I mean you broke my nose, but itâs all good.â
âHow about I make it up to you.â
Davey looked at you with a questioning look.
âHow about a date next Friday?â you suggested.
Davey immediately nodded.
âThat sounds fantastic.â
Davey scooted closer to you and took your hand in his and in that moment you couldnât be more grateful for mosh pits and broken noses.

AU:Â âImagine person A trying to secretly kiss person Bâs cheek while theyâre asleep but B shifts and A accidentally kisses their mouth and pulls back flustered and looks down at a wide eyed B who pulls them back for a real kissâ
Davey and you had been amazing friends for years. The two of you grew up together. He was a typical boy next door. And since the beginning of your freshman year, you had liked him.
The two of you were in the same friend group. And all of the boys in your friend group knew of your little crush on Davey. You had to bribe them to secrecy.
But little did you know, Davey had to do the same thing.
The two of you were hanging out at your house, having a movie marathon. You were wearing sweats, your hair pulled up into a bun, glasses on the bridge of your nose. You didnât consider yourself the prettiest at the time, but Davey thought you were gorgeous.
It was getting late and you were getting tired. You wrapped yourself in a blanket and started to doze off while Davey continued to watch the movie. He looked over at you and thought of how cute you are.
Knowing that you probably wouldnât wake up anytime soon, he decided to take off, but before he did, he turned to you and crouched near you. He breathed in, trying to gain some courage. He moved his face and started to go near your cheek to give you a quick kiss. But you were the type of sleeper that tosses and turns while you slept, so just as he was about to reach your cheek, you face turned perfectly just for him to kiss the corner of your lips.
From the slight touch of your lips, your eyes opened wide to see Davey red as a beet and completely flustered and embarassed. But you...you were just thinking about how Davey had just kissed you.
â(Y/N)....oh my...Iâm so sorry, that was a total accident. I justâŚ.I wanted to kissâŚ.your cheekâŚ. And, and you shifted and then all of a sudden.â
You quickly shifted your body and grabbed the back of Daveyâs head and pulled him back towards you to shut his blabbering up. Your lips touched and butterflies flew around in your stomach. Davey pulled away and blushed even more.
âGood night, (Y/N).â he said as he started for the door.
âGood night, David,â you said. âNo need to be embarrassed.â
