Suggestion (and Marigold) belong to @jukkaricity <3 - this kind of turned more into Queenie yearning sorry 😭!!

Brilliant rays of warmth shone through the rare gaps between high leaves and towering trees. Queenie stepped from her flower hut out into the sunlight - basking in the heat of summer with a sigh. There was much to do, as always, during the first weeks of the season. Her wings fluttered as she glided down from the tall branch where her hut sat. Her skirt twirled up and around her legs like a falling petal as she reached the woodland floor of Pixie Grove most delicately. A perfect entrance. She knew her wings were looking stunning this morning. Vibrant yellows, oranges and pinks reflected onto the grass below her. Queenie looked good and she knew it. She excitedly spun around to see if Mari was arriving home yet - only to be faced with the one person she was dreading.

Commander Glastrom scowled. “Have a good sleep in?” 

“Oh of course!” Queenie offered the most sarcastic smile she could manage. 

“Antione,” he began, putting his hands on his hips and looking to the guard fairy beside him, “how many days into summer are we?”

“Ah,” Antione’s eyes flicked to Queenie, “twelve.” 

The commander glared at her. “Actually, we’re only ten days into summer.” He barked the last syllable. “Antione, tell me how many different species of crops are in need of defence.” With his hands behind his back - he began to pace around her.  

“One hundred and nine.” Antione sighed.

“Excellent,” he stopped to stand right in front of her. His height making it so she was only up to his lower chest. She didn’t give him the satisfaction of looking up at his face. “Queenie,” he lowered his voice - as if she were a child being told off, “can you tell me how many predators are about today?” He knitted his brows together and squinted his eyes - as if asking a genuine question he didn’t know the answer to. 

She had to close her eyes, lest she roll them…although she really, really wanted to. “Twenty-three,” she mumbled. 

“Louder!”

“TWENTY-three.” 

“OVER ONE HUNDRED SPECIES THAT NEED PROTECTING FROM TWENTY-THREE UNIQUE SPECIES OF PREDATORS AND YOU’RE HAVING A BIT OF A SLEEP IN!?” He leaned down just so he could yell in her face. “STAND STRAIGHT WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU SOLDIER!” She could feel the eyes of onlookers now staring at them. At least they’re getting a good show. 

Begrudgingly, Queenie straightened her back and offered a little passive aggressive salute. 

He turned away, “I can’t even look at you anymore - just,” he flicked his head back only to bark his next order, “get to work!” He marched off. Antione trailed behind him - turning back to offer a sympathetic expression. In return, Queenie just snickered and imitated him by turning heel and theatrically marching away. 

As she already knew it would be - the day was completely fucking boring. Most creatures were already deterred enough by the ginormous fence the big people installed on the easterly wall of the forest. Those who weren’t had been around long enough to understand the flora here was off limits. Besides, just because there were twenty-three species of predator out during this season didn’t mean they were smart enough to band together and coordinate an attack. The most Queenie saw today were a few bunnies that she just needed to scream at to scare away. 

But the day didn’t matter. Getting home did. She raced back - wings flapping behind her at such speeds she was hoping she didn’t look like a (slightly more fabulous) fly. If she was quick - she might be able to catch Mari before she had to leave. 

She spotted her pretty, feathery, purple wings in an instant once she got closer to Pixie Grove - only just leaving their hut. The town was as busy as it was in the day - fireflies and magical light illuminating the streets as the nocturnals prepared to go to work. Queenie practically tackled her midair - enticing a squeak from her little moth. 

She kissed her head, then her cheek, then her nose, then her lips, then her cheek again-

Marigold giggled - gently pushing Queenie’s face away from hers. “Queenie!!” 

“Hm?” She pouted - looking back proud of her work in covering Mari’s face in little flutters of red. She quite enjoyed the lovesick expressions she drew out of her. “You should call in sick today.” 

Mari’s expression turned somber, “Queenie.” 

“You’re out all night!”

“I know.” Mari sighed and drew her back into an embrace. 

“Will you take me out to dinner?” 

“My shift starts in 10 minutes.” 

“Then afterwards!” Queenie pleaded. 

“At 7am?”

Queenie sighed, wriggling from her lover’s arms and turning away. “Maybe I could swap shifts.” 

“My light, the sun needs you.” Mari reached for her hand - pressing a kiss to the other woman’s palm and trying to pull her in again.

Queenie wasn’t one to resist - she allowed herself to be held. “There are many fallen seeds to the south - the um dead people ones…I thought you might want to know.” She mumbled.

“Thank you,” Mari leaned upwards to kiss her cheek, “Many could use them.”

“Will you at least be in bed by sunrise? I was waiting for you this morning and ended up fashionably late to guard duty.” 

Mari sighed - grabbing both Queenie’s hands to hold in her own. “I will try.” She nodded. 

“You better.” With one final kiss to her lips - Queenie fluttered down to the branch where their hut sat. She didn’t bother looking back at Mari as she fluttered away. She’d probably do something embarrassing and desperate like chase after her. Queenie was beautiful and she knew it, she was not one to chase…at least she wasn’t before meeting her.

Hehe - thank you Jukkari for the suggestion! Hopefully I haven’t butchered Mari’s character too much 😅!! Evidently - creative writing isn’t my strong suit - but I had fun writing this and I think sometimes that’s all that matters :D!

Thank you so much for the tags, @sorcerousadventurer, @kogarashi-art, @rooks-dagger, @serialsforbellara, @redaresss, jukkaricity and @curiouswisp 🥰 I freaking love these things so much!!! Redrawing them is such a fun exercise (and I love thinking about Queenie in different AUs 💗💕💞🫶!!!)

There were so many fun options in this one - I had actually made a few more alt outfits for her :D (thank you Kogarashi, Jukkari and Peaches for helping me decide on which one to draw 🫶)

Her having beautiful colourful butterfly wings was very important to me 🙂‍↕️!! The first one I tried to give her more “flowery” vibes and the second one was supposed to be more fiery (like how Queenie is usually haha 😂).
