okay so this has been hiding in my drafts for a while, but after writing a bit about lil Nahla, I think it's time to share a little more about her!
specific shoutout to @in-the-drowning-deep -- thank you for asking about my girl and inspiring me to talk more about her <3
Rules: post 5 random facts about your OC. It can be fun or tragic, spicy or not, short or long, with or without explanation, fascinating or mundane, your choice.
And as a little treat... how about some Nahla?
1. Nahla once served proudly in the military. In my story for her, she was not adopted but the child of a longstanding military family; she followed in her fatherβs footsteps, enlisted, and served with honors. Unfortunately, one of her superiors turned coat and, in an effort to discredit and disenfranchise the military of Tevinter, coordinated an assault that resulted in the deaths of civilians. Nahla, leading the charge, realized too late that their target was not a qunari outpost but a town, and carries those deaths close to her heart. She never re-enlisted, flunked out of Templar service, flunked out of guard service, and now helps the Shadow Dragons as personal penance for her (perceived) failures.
2. Nahla has a little apartment in Docktown, but she doesnβt live there. She could! But instead she uses it as a safe house for freed slaves, in case there isnβt an immediate out for someone. She keeps it tidy and well-stocked with things someone might need on their first night of freedom (food, fresh clothes, soap, etc) and has occasionally stayed there with people who are afraid to be alone (especially if itβs a child/children).
3. Nahla has a massive tattoo of a dragon. It starts at her right hand, goes up her arm, across her back, and down her left leg, where it curls around a gnarly scar she received during the aforementioned mission that went entirely wrong. Half of the dragon is fully filled in with scales. The other half, partially. For each person she is able to help rescue from slavery, she adds one scale to the unfinished side. In this way, she keeps a record and hopes to achieve balance for all of the lost lives she feels responsible for. Time will tell if it will be enough.
4. Nahla and Tarquin are best of friends! Tarquin is the one who recruited Nahla to the Shadow Dragons. He had heard of her family and of her, especially after the fallout of her mission and the subsequent court martialing of her commanding officer, wherein Nahla stood up and put her reputation on the line to share her testimony. After she failed to keep her position in the city guard, rankling against the structures and systems in place in Minrathous, Tarquin thought she could benefit from doing something a little more... behind the scenes. Working with the Shadow Dragons gives Nahla the outlet she needs to feel like she's balancing the scales again.
5. Nahla has an exceptional singing voice. She often sings while keeping busy, whether it's cooking, tidying up, cleaning her armor, or, you know... killing Venatori. It's a little unsettling, I'm sure, to have someone humming Cida Ciconia's latest ballad as they draw back their bow to obliterate you, but them's the breaks.

Slowly but inevitably I'm turning datv into soap opera.
In this episode Fenlath meets his mamae to discuss Elgar'nan's ritual.
I mean, it has to be hard. And awkward. Especially for Lavellan. It is her son. Son she was supposed to protect, but she couldn't, and now he's an adult who spent most of his life (by now) without her. She remembers him 8 y.o. boy, but this young man isn't a child anymore. Maybe they were supposed to fix things, to find a way.. but evanuris were unleashed, two Blights for the price of one, and another end of the world planned for this week.
So he's trying, and she's trying but it isn't an easy doing.
Despite their age difference being about 10 years now (or so), she's still his mother. She feels guilty and responsible, and it affects their conversations because she's horrified by the thought she might damage their relationship ever more. And every meeting is like a walking to a minefield.
That's why Lavellan doesn't talk about Varric (she tried to, Fenlath said he "doesn't want to talk about it", she backed up). That's why she doesn't mess with his plans suggesting help by using old connections or blackmailing or anything else (she wanted to, but Fenlath said "I've got this", she backed up). That's why she doesn't insist on telling the truth to Dreadwolf.
That's why she doesn't "express concern" about Fenlath having a crush on a man almost twice his age who is also an assassin possessed by demon (and, truth to be told, she's the worst person to give relationship advices and she knows it).
Really unhealthy dynamic here but this family is made of self-destructive regrets, and that's how you know they're related.
Can't even decide what is more stressful for him: to deal with unleashed evanuris and their horrors.. or being forcefully connected with his father he never knew.
He always thought he should hate Dread Wolf. Or, at least, despise. Because Dread Wolf hurt mamae, because he abandoned them, because he didn't choose them. Because he never loved them enough.
He always thought, one day (it has to be the right day), he will look right into Dread Wolf's eyes and say: "Yes, you left us. You thought we weren't good enough for you. But guess what? We got through. We don't need you anymore".
He's been thinking about that particular day a lot since he was a child grown enough to understand why mamae is becoming really sad when somebody is talking about his father.
This day is coming. But something has changed and Fenlath doesn't understand why. Or he prefers to pretend he doesn't.
Still, he's trying to find even more reasons to hate Dread Wolf. Provoking him, disrespects, annoying with questions. The more he tries the less it works. He starts to see someone he can even sympathize with. It's unsettling. Wrong. Feels like a betrayal. Mamae would never judge him, Fenlath knows it, but he's judging himself.
The problem is: he can't find the anger and hatred that he felt before, it's gone. Deep down, he enjoys those conversations. He wants to know his father, and wants to prove himself. He wants to be seen.
I think, that was the first moment when something changed. First time he saw a real person under the Dread Wolf mask. Person who's tried to make the world better. A good person. Hard to go back after that revelation.
