I've been a voracious archivist/data hoarder ever since I first got access to a computer, and it's paid off more times than I can count. Just the other day I came across a PDF copy of an analysis post for one of my fandoms. The post was made on an old forum and is the most detailed and interesting analysis of a particular story element I've ever seen. Back in like 2012 I saved the post as a PDF, because even then I saved everything I liked.

Anyway, flash forward to 2025 and I decided to see if the URL included in the document was still live. I wasn't very surprised to see that the forum is long dead. However, even the Wayback Machine had no record of this thread. If I hadn't saved a copy of it way back when, I would have never, ever been able to read this analysis again!

The Internet Archive is sadly not infallible, especially when it comes to things like forum threads. You can do your part by manually saving things to the Wayback Machine, but I also recommend keeping your own archives. Aside from just saving pages as PDFs, I highly recommend a browser extension called SingleFile that lets you archive pages as HTML files.

Learning that GB, Gb, Gib, and GiB are four completely different units of measurement (and they are not interchangeable in the slightest) fully ruined my life.

If you've ever seen internet or USB speeds written as "5 Gbps" and assumed that meant "five gigabytes per second," YOU'RE WRONG!

It means "five gigabits per second," which is equivalent to 0.625 gigabytes per second (written as 0.625 GB/s or 625 MB/s).

GB is Gigabyte. 1 GB = 1 GB Gb is Gigabit. 1 Gb = 0.125 GB (125 MB) Gib is Gibibit. 1 Gib = 0.134218 GB (134.218 MB) GiB is Gibibyte. 1 GiB = 1.07374 GB

Awful. Stupid. And the "Gi" prefix is not the only one. There are KiB, Tib, PB, Mb. You name it. They exist. Nightmare units, but at least they follow easy an conversion rule book and iron-clad naming scheme, so I guess things could be worse.

I torrent movies and TV shows because fuck streaming services. I buy physical media, DVDs, blu-rays. The only time I don't do it is with indie media. Because independent artists deserve recognition and money for their art. But big corporations and companies? The 1%? No. Hell no.

Anyway, I've been very paranoid about the possibility of internet black-outs since the Trump Admin took power, and while I don't think that's in the near-future, I think the on-going wave of censorship is going to get far worse before it gets better (and so it is important to keep hope, because it will get better). The bright side of my earlier paranoia is I've found a few tools to help with backing up anything people might want to save for themselves and figure I might as well share some of them today: 1. Hyrdrus - File-Management software that also comes with an image downloader. Can be used to save images off of forums or boorus (yes, even boorus particularly vulnerable to censorship due to content, such as the green or furry blue site). It seems pretty well documented and it's served my purposes well enough. It keeps tags on images for sites that have something like that. 2. Zotero - Technically not for archival work but I used this to help quickly save a few articles earlier this year and it did the task well enough. 3. Obsidian - Again technically not for archival work, however, multiple plug-ins enable the saving of snapshots of websites, images, as well as text documents within the program, in a way that I find very easy to manage. Plug-ins include link-archiver, ReaditLater, as well as various other site-specific tools. I've made a personal archive for translations of my favorite series using this, in the event of disaster. 4. WFDownloader - Another image downloader, easy to use across multiple websites once you learn how to grab your site cookies. Currently seems to have some issues on twitter hashtag searches, which hadn't been the case before but the developer seems aware and is waiting for the code to settle down. Recently had a major patch to help with pinterest board downloads

5. JDownloader 2 - Another great tool that I haven't had much experience with. One of the de-facto tools on r/datahoarding 6. Fanficfare - I haven't used this one much either because as it turns out I'm very picky about what fics I want to save, but it came to me very highly recommended. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for easy downloading / archiving of games. There's a slew of command-line downloaders out there as well just a github search away. But I hope these links help someone out there and maybe inspire them to start saving that which inspires joy within them.
