Darren Bent has told Football Insider that he believes Jack Grealish will be delighted to have John McGinn back alongside him in the Aston Villa starting XI. Grealish has been excellent for Villa this season, netting an impressive seven goals and gaining six assists in the Premier League (as per Transfermarkt). With McGinn alongside him in midfield, Dean Smith has a strong duo in the middle of the park. Scotland international McGinn had also been in good form, with three goals and two assists in 20 games this term. Since his ankle injury just before Christmas, Villa have struggled with six defeats in 10 Premier League matches. Appearing for Villa in a friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, McGinn’s return to fitness has now been addressed by former Villans striker Bent. “It’s massive,” he told Football Insider. “Hopefully now Jack’s back won’t be as sore because he’s been carrying that team for a long time now. I’m sure he’s more delighted than anyone to see John McGinn come back. “McGinn was brilliant last season, brilliant earlier on this season when he wasn’t injured. The work rate he puts in, the quality he has with the ball at his feet, the combination him and Jack have got, it’s just another top-quality player they’ve got. “I’m pretty sure if he’d stayed fit and him and Jack could have stayed in for the majority of the season, I would have liked to think Villa would be in a much better position than they are in. “They’ve got him back in that crucial part of the season so that is like having a brand new, top-quality signing, he is massive for Aston Villa coming back out of this injury.” McGinn’s return to full fitness should certainly prove to be a real boost for Smith to utilise over the next month as the Premier League season resumes. The Scotsman and Grealish are two of Villa’s key players and it will be interesting to see if they remain at the club past the summer, especially if the Midlands club suffer relegation to the Championship. For now though, both will undoubtedly be eager to get back on the pitch and help keep the club’s top-flight status alive. Former England striker Darren Bent has been speaking about West Ham, and he is excited about young Grady Diangana after his performances so far whilst on loan at West Bromwich Albion this season. The winger has helped the Baggies fight for promotion in the Championship this term and in his 21 league appearances he has managed to score five goals from the left-wing, whilst also chipping in with six assists on top of that per Transfermarkt. This has seen many West Ham fans excited over the 22 year-old’s potential, and it was reported recently that David Moyes will give the Englishman a key role at the club next season, per Football.London. Speaking to Football Insider about Diangana, Bent said, “They’ve got the guy on loan at West Brom – Diangana – he’s another top, top player, he’s been brilliant for West Brom this season. “It really surprised me in January that they didn’t take him back. “He’s a top player and if that’s the route they’re going down – they bring him back, they brought Jarrod Bowen from Hull and he’s been an absolute revelation, if they can get him (Eze) from QPR as well, he’s been absolutely top drawer –I really like the direction they’re going in.” It’s hard to disagree with Bent here, the club could have possibly looked to bring the winger back in January as they are currently fighting for their lives in the Premier League. He could have provided a real attacking intent which is proven by his stats as he managedon average 1.5 shots per game, which would rank him fifth best in the Hammers squad, whilst his 1.3 key passes would rank him third and his 2.3 successful dribbles per game would see him in the top three, viaWhoScored. The Irons have also seen Jarrod Bowen make a positive start, scoring one goal in his four appearances for the East London side, showing that a player excelling in the league below can continue to succeed in England’s top flight, so the fact that next season the club could have Diangana and Bowen on either flank should be something that excites everyone involved with the club. It seems like the Hammers could have some great talent in their squad for next season, and it’s hard to not side with Bent and be excited for the potential and direction that the club could be going in. Former footballer Darren Bent thinks Watford’s Andre Gray could be the answer to Leeds’ striker search after labelling the ex-Burnley man as the ‘perfect’ signing. Gray has started just seven times in the league for the Hornets this season while he has plenty of Championship experience with Brentford and Burnley, and was instrumental in the latter’s promotion in 2015/16 as he scored 23 times. Recalling his history in the second tier, Bent told Football Insider that Gray could be exactly what Leeds will be looking for in their quest for top-flight football. He said: “He was one of the best players in the Championship that season, he’s got the pace, the power and that might be just what they need. Obviously [Patrick] Bamford isn’t really scoring the goals at the moment and it seems like neither they or West Brom want to win this league at the moment. It’s strange but I think that will be the perfect signing.” Gray is just one of several strikers who have been talked up as a possible partner for Patrick Bamford in the Leeds attack, with Che Adams and Dwight Gayle among the other potential arrivals at Elland Road that have been mooted in recent weeks. The Watford striker has clearly shown he has what it takes at that level, while his Premier League experience would surely be of use to Leeds should he join them and help gain promotion, so it would appear this is a move that ticks many boxes. That Nigel Pearson’s side have rejected Leeds’ advances (according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay) would look to be a major spanner in the works, though Bent’s summation of his credentials certainly earmarks the 28-year-old as another potential avenue for the Whites to explore. While Hay suggested wages could also be a stumbling block, Gray’s signing may not be a particularly likely outcome, though Leeds would perhaps know exactly what they were getting by bringing in the striker. Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has slammed right-back Serge Aurier following his most recent performance against Chelsea. The Ivorian played the full 90 minutes against the Blues, but he could do nothing to stop a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their London rivals. After watching him struggle against Chelsea, Bent doesn’t believe that the former Paris Saint Germain man is a trustworthy defender and insisted that whilst he had shown improvements under Jose Mourinho prior to Sunday, he still has mistakes in him. When discussing Aurier’s recent performances, Bent told Football Insider: “I know he’s played well since Mourinho came in but we know he’s got these kind of performances in him. “I think at times he flatters to deceive. He’s got all the attributes of being a good defender but his positional play, his game management, his decision making – for me you just can’t trust him on a full-time basis. “I think that’s what’s killing them at the minute.” Bent is right when he says you can’t trust Aurier, particularly when it comes to his defensive responsibilities. This was highlighted in the game against Chelsea. Indeed, he lost possession a whopping 26 times against the Blues, whilst his passing accuracy was way down at 62% (SofaScore). Added to that, he was also at fault for the first goal they conceded on Sunday, turning his back as their opponents took a short corner which ultimately led to Willian firing past Paulo Gazzaniga (Sky Sports). Whilst there have been some improvements to his game under Mourinho, they have been in an attacking sense with a goal and two assists in his last seven appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt). He is still something of a liability defensively and it is something that Mourinho must look to address sooner rather than later. Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho could look to sign a more physical replacement for Harry Winks in the transfer window, according to their former striker Darren Bent. The England international started the midweek game at Old Trafford but struggled to make much of an impact before being substituted after 70 minutes (BBC Sport). Bent believes that the 23-year-old struggled physically in the fixture against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and indicated that he wouldn’t be surprised if Mourinho went out and signed a midfielder with more strength to beef them up in the middle of the park. When discussing Winks’ performance against the Red Devils, Bent told Football Insider: “I think that [Scott] McTominay and Fred bullied him a little bit. “Harry Winks has done well the last few weeks, he’s maybe not featured as much under Mourinho but physically, he got bullied. “I wonder if Mourinho’s going to look for somebody like a [Nemanja] Matic. I know people will go: ‘Why would you go back to that old-style player’, but sometimes you need someone in there who’s a powerful presence and Matic is that.” Bent is certainly right when he says that Winks wasn’t great against Manchester United on Wednesday as when you look at his statistics for that game, they make for poor reading. Indeed, he lost possession six times, was dribbled past on one occasion and failed to make a single key pass during his time on the pitch (via SofaScore). Added to that, in his 14 appearances this season, on average he wins just 53% of his ground duels and makes just 1.4 tackles per game (SofaScore). Stats like that could well encourage Mourinho to do just as Bent has suggested and bring a midfielder in who is more of a ball-winner and will give them more physicality in the middle of the park. At the moment they are leaking goals, having shipped eight in their last four in all competitions (Transfermarkt), so they certainly do need to tighten up – and adding a stronger holding midfielder could help. Former Spurs striker Darren Bent believes that the club should not turn down the chance to bring Jose Mourinho to the club should the opportunity arise. Mourinho is currently out of work, while Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in a desperate run of form, having not won a Premier League game since late September. The Argentinian has previously admitted that he fears the team’s recent results could cost him his job, and Bent feels Mourinho should not be dismissed as a potential successor should the club move on from Pochettino. Speaking to Football Insider, Bent simply pointed to the Portuguese’s record as a reason why Spurs may not be able to turn the three-time Premier League winner down. He said: “A lot of people always talk negatively about Mourinho but he’s a born winner, look at what he has won. “He has won things that [the] club haven’t won, he has won the Champions League, Spurs got to the final last season, but they haven’t won it. “He’s won the Premier League with Chelsea [and] Spurs have never done that – so before the fans start screaming ‘we don’t want him’, they need to look at his pedigree and what he has done. “They’d be lucky to have him.” It’s a simple argument that Bent makes, but a compelling one, nonetheless. Mourinho has a proven track record, delivering both domestically and in Europe in multiple countries – and with plenty of Premier League experience to hand, there are arguably few better candidates going by his lengthy personal honours list. However, one thing that could be his downfall is potentially what could have hindered Pochettino’s current spell – a lack of funds. ‘The Special One’ often spent big at his former clubs – particularly at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United – while a single League Cup triumph was his only major domestic trophy at Old Trafford despite spending nearly £350m on new players in his first two seasons alone. Meanwhile, Spurs have spent little over £100m in the last two years. Therefore, while Mourinho has the relevant experience to make Spurs a success, it may come at a substantial cost – though that may be of little importance to a club that has gone over a decade without a major trophy.
