Husband came up from putting something in the basement with a *look* on his face.
Me: What's wrong?
Husband: Nothing
Me: What happened?
Husband: Nothing. Darkness demon.
Me: What?
Husband: You know, the darkness demon. That thing you were scared of as a kid that hid in the dark basement and grabs your ankles.
Me: No, I don't. Mine was a toilet monster!
The return and smear
Shortly after my time in the depths I had made the formal decision. (for like maybe the fourth time) to go back to the order of knights i had joined as Methorim’s squire. he and I had a falling out way back since my incident with the Boneyard, and i had not sought to repair things with my 9 year mentor.
This time however i was more committed to actually going back. I mentally prepared myself for all the things that were probably going to happen. All the looks and stares and gawking and shaming that was bound to be amongst the prideful beings there. I still resolved myself to show up anyway.
I focused and felt the new darkness i had acquired from the depths still distinct amongst all of the other darkness i’d gathered before. It kept reforming itself as a whole rather than just remain assimilated through my darkness and always as an external object separate from my body and armor. I chuckled and made a passing comment to it’s similarity to something i had read about before and immediately it took the shape and felt almost ‘right’ being that way. That caught my attention quickly, but Almost right isn’t right. So i had to begin changing how i would adapt it to myself. But i would save that for another time.
I steeled myself and brought myself back to the Order’s castle. it didn’t take long before i was before it’s gates. For a place that i had only visited once and stayed for only about a month it certainly felt nostalgic and with that nostalgia came a bite of guilt. I had barely gotten into their ranks before I fucked up in one of the biggest ways possible.
I took a deep breath and walked inside. some people recognized me others couldn’t have cared less. I walked around for a bit, before finding the place i was looking to go. I stood in front of the door of the General Knights conference hall with some trepidation.
“Come in. we’ve been expecting you.” someone called from inside.
‘Fuck’ was the first word that came to mind, but “I am entering now.” is what I said.
I placed my hand against the door and pushed it open almost as easily I do a normal door. i make nothing of it as I step into the room where all the general knights sit. All except Methorim. his seat is empty. I remember all the people there except one. The one person that took over the spot of the recently deceased General Knight that i had only briefly seen through the guise of a doppelganger.
He glares at me with disgust clear on his face. I look around the room trying to guess their judgement of me. Unfortunately for me most are passive faced so i can’t tell what they think of me.
I bow to them and raise my head. “I have returned.” it’s all i can think to say. I am not sure what to say or do. Juraksool nods at me and tells me to move into the center of the room. I do and feel a shiver up my spine. Being in the middle of all of them feels like i might just end up trapped and awaiting a death sentence.
“Why is he still allowed in here?” the newest general asked with as much venom as he could muster. there was a pause for a moment before one of the general knights simply said. “Because he can still open the door.”
I smiled ever so slightly at the response, but kept my eyes only on Juraksool. He held a small smile on his face as well. “You have been busy child. You’ve changed a great deal since last we met.”
I nod. “I’ve learned many new things. Been to many new places.”
“And brought shame upon our order doing so, you brat.” the new general said accusingly.
I suppressed my emotions so i didn’t speak out of turn, but Juraksool lifted his hand. “He knows what he has done, but his actions do not speak for all of ours. He has tarnished his own self and not the name of our Order. Or do you presume to know how it is exactly that he has come to lose his name?”
I shivered at the statement. I knew they knew about the fact that i lost my name, but I was never sure if they knew how or why. I wasn’t sure if i wanted to tell them why exactly.
The general knight stared me down a moment and huffed in contempt. “No Lord Knight. I am not aware of how he has come to lose his name, but i see no reason to allow him to stay as a member of the order. Having a nameless amongst our ranks is disgraceful enough.”
Juraksool finally took his eyes off of me and gave a the general a glare. “Stop with your incessant whining about disgraceful actions. in this very room I made the fatal error of being caught unaware by the enemy, but this boy saved my life with his power. In that respect it was disgraceful of me to rely on the help of a squire, but he has never once tried to take advantage of that fact. It slipped quietly in the history, but you wouldn’t know that. You weren’t allowed into this room yet. If you cannot be quiet and allow him to give his reasons for what has happened, I will find a task for you to accomplish and the meeting will continue without you.”
The general knight held his tongue, but it was evident that he felt like he’d just gotten slapped in the face. His glare at me was filled with fire and poison, but he also seemed a bit ashamed himself.
Juraksool turned his attention back to me and looked me over. “Do you wish to remain in our ranks?”
My jaw kinda just fell open. I blanked out because i was expecting a straight up rejection, and not a question of whether i wanted to stay or not. After a few moments of silence passed by I thought about it. I nodded. “Yes. I would like to stay in the order.”
He nodded. “Good. Now, I must ask. Why you have come here on your own and not with Methorim?”
I took a deep breath and sighed a little. “We...had a disagreement as I was paying for the mistake that culminated in me losing my name. I have not spoken with him since.”
Juraksool nodded in quiet understanding. The new General gave a smug smirk as he looked down at me and I felt the need to pop his bubble. “I have chosen not to forgive him for what happened between us and so i have not sought his guidance since.”
The General knights looked between each other in mild speculative interest, but Juraksool nodded once more. “Understandable. Times such as that test the nature of people and bonds are tested from both sides. Now there is an important thing that we must know. Are you still the squire of General Knight Methorim?”
I felt myself tense up slightly out of fear and slightly out of anger. The answer to that was vague. He’d threatened me with removing my apprenticeship, but never formalized it. I hadn’t sought him out to fix things, so i wasn’t really learning anything from him. “I am unsure of what we are to one another right now sir.”
Juraksool looked at me and raised an eyebrow. “If he is not mentoring you at the moment than you shall be given the temporary title of knight. Your previous display of skill has earned you at least that. Majority here have agreed to that much.”
I was surprised to say the least, but I smiled happily. That lasted about a total of 2 seconds because the new general knight began his protestations immediately. “I don’t see how this child could be a knight. From what I was told he merely has an overabundance of strength and his uncontrolled power is what let his steal the victory from his opponent. Not to mention his opponent losing himself to his emotions and preoccupying the beast long enough to allow him to accomplish the task. I say we give him a more easily measurable task.”
I would’ve thought that he would’ve been shut down, but a majority of the Generals actually agreed with him. I was okay with it until he named the task. “If he can manage a single strike on me. I’ll accept not only his strength, but the skill of a knight as well.”
I groaned inwardly as he jumped down and called his weapon to him. it was some kind of short curved stick with a blade on the end. Way to short to be a spear, and the blade was curved almost like a miniature war scythe. i pulled out my spear and readied myself.
The new general focused down on me and i could feel his power trying to smother me. It was heavy, but I fought it off with my own power and kept my stance firm. The signal was given to start and i jumped in first. i had hoped that the suddenness of my attack would throw him off, but he blocked the attack easily and we began an exchange of blows. He was noticeably keeping himself from using his full power, but he wasn’t holding back too much of it. I’d say he was using 65-70% of his full strength, but it was enough to keep me from doing much as i was. So i decided to switch it up on him.
My four other eyes opened and with it came another surge of strength. I struck while he flinched at the sudden change and knocked away his weapon enough to create an opening. I went in for another strike, but he swiftly dodged and fixed his form. I growled in frustration and charged him again. I continued striking at him a few more times before changing my form to the silver predator i had dreamed of in the coliseum. My moves were a lot more nimble and sharp and it threw him off his balance. I shifted forms again into one of the Dancers. That form drew interested looked from everyone in the room, but when i began to move into a war dance i heard their grunts of pain and discomfort. The war dance twisted most of their visions and threw the new general off and made him misstep. I took the advantage immediately and grasped his forward leg with my tail and jerked it to the right as i grabbed his head and pushed it to the left and used the momentum to kick his spinning torso. He flew to the far wall as i landed.
I had accomplished the task, but I immediately felt that he wasn’t playing around anymore. his body hit the wall and the second his feet touched the ground he was rocketing towards me. I reverted to my normal form and pulled up the strongest barrier i could and raised my weapon to block and i was glad i did. He broke through the barrier and my weapon groaned under the force of the strike, but i successfully blocked it. I doubt i could’ve blocked much more, but i didn’t have to. The other generals were next to me after that last strike and they gave him the silent warning to stop.
He gritted his teeth and let his weapon fall away into his shadow. “While i don’t know how you...changed like you did, it was an effective means of combat. It showed your...skill to be that of a knight’s.”
i bowed my head to him a little fearfully, but he just turned away and returned to his seat in the half-circle of general knights. The others did the same and then i felt a summons.
“Good.” said Juraksool, “Now that that has been settled there is much to discuss.”
The pull got stronger, but i didn’t let myself be pulled away. “I apologize Lord Knight, but I don’t think i’ll be able to answer your questions for much longer. I have somewhere i must be.”
a different general began to ask me if i had grown arrogant in my thinking because of my new title, but then a portal opened behind me and i felt the presence of the Bloody Maidens right behind me. “I cannot leave right now.”
They did not say anything, but i felt a hand reach out from the portal and smear blood under my right eye in a single horizontal line. “Do not keep us waiting. That mark will only come off if we wish it.”
the hand and presence disappeared and i was left with several stunned and confused General knights. I smiled a little as i looked at Juraksool. “I’ve been to a lot of new places.”
Meeting the D.D. Emperor
It was almost a full day i think before my astral body finally landed back in the realm i was supposed to be in. I had made a promise to go check on a someone for a friend and made to keep my word. I had no idea where i had been dumped out at though. I was by some kind of forest area, but none that i had seen before. I figured it didn't really matter where i was as long as i could be uninterrupted. I began laying down the ground work for a strong Shadow gate (long distance teleportation magic) and filling it with power. I had barely gotten an eighth of it done when i heard the clattering of metal armor and people appeared. about five or six. "Who are you!? What are you doing here!? Do you have permission to work your magics here!?"
I blinked and stopped what i was doing. thought about it for a second before absorbing the magic i was pouring into my spell and so it disappeared. "No. I don't have permission to do this. I apologize. As for where I am, I am unsure. I was....placed here through unforeseen circumstances." A pretty way of saying I got lost.
The guards didn't exactly looked pleased with me, but they lowered their weapons when they saw that i was compliant. "You are in the Capital. The Palace garden of the Emperor himself."
i turned around and looked at the forest (maybe woods is better to describe it) i was on the edge of. There were miles of trees. I could feel the darkness exuding from it telling me so. I don't know anyone who has miles of garden like this, but i was skeptic to call it a garden. Then it struck me. The Emperor's garden. (probably should've struck me sooner, but my thought process is strange.)
I restrained my emotional responses outwardly, but internally i was concerned. The current emperor was the one who killed off my entire D.D. family line. He removed every scrap of their existence for reasons only known to himself now. For a while i wanted to kill him and take his position, find out about my family, and learn his reasons, but after everything that had happened lately i found myself questioning everything i thought about it all. I had given up trying to become a noble and taking his place a while ago, but now i was uncertain i wanted to bother trying to figure out what happened with my family. I felt a certain part of me had been bound by my desires to know and my anger blinded to me the idea that it may have been done with good reason. There was so little i actually knew about the situation and the people involved that i wasn't sure i even wanted to try. Especially after what happened after my last attempt.
"Come. You have been summoned." The guard in charge said to me and opened turned. He led the procession, with me in the center and the guards surrounding me. I had no intention of fighting back, but, i wasn't sure that this was going to end out well.
We walked for several minutes through the grand halls of the palace and i took in the architecture, the statues, the paintings, and the colors. The place was definitely decadent, but not gaudy. At least not to me. Eventually we finally entered a throne room similar to what i knew to be the throne room in the Vampire kingdom. It was long like a football field and high up.So high you could barely see the ceiling through the darkness. It reminded my of a slimmed down stadium.
The guards went only so far before pushing me forward and telling me to continue. There were a pair of guards ahead of me, and i could tell them were knights, maybe even general knights. I was not gonna be able to run from this. There was no chance in hell i was gonna be able to escape two General Knights.
I was ushered another short distance and then stopped when i was maybe a hundred or so feet away from the emperor. He was covered in shadow armor, so i couldn't make out his features well, but he was muscular and a bit on the taller side. 6'5+ i would think. He looked over at me with slight disinterest and set down whatever he had been reading before.
"Who are you?" he asked simply and i remembered my own words and looked immediately down . I didn't open my mouth. Not yet. "I asked Who are you?"
I remained quiet and found it getting increasingly harder to breathe as his began flaring his power over me. I fell to my knees and didn't try fighting back. "Tell me. Now." he growled out annoyed.
"I am a Nameless." i answered, having now finally been given permission to speak.
His flare of power stopped. It was silent of all, but my hard breathing which i began to try to immediately calm. It was so simple, yet so challenging when thinking of the fact the person in front of you has the power to execute you for breathing to loudly. For looking at them. For almost everything imaginable.
"A Nameless." he said with clear disdain. He clearly didn't like me, but not many D.D. would be able to look past that no matter what their class was so i expected it.
"Raise your head Nameless." he spoke commandingly. I did as he said, but avoided looking at him. "You entered the palace grounds without permission or detection. Tell me How."
I explained to him that i couldn't really answer. At best my description was a teleportation spell was formed right, but the destination portion made wrong. it was close enough to the truth.
"I see. Then you have merely broken those rules by accident." The Emperor said with an ease that made me uneasy. like waiting for the first sound of thunder to begin the downpour of rain. He watched me for a moment and then his face turned slightly confused. He sniffed the air. Once. Twice. A third time and he opened his eyes at me with a sharp glare. "You smell like the *condemned.* (I use condemned because it's the closest word i can think of what he said, but it doesn't seem like the right translation either.) Why?"
I could only think that he was speaking about my ancestral family, but i merely shook my head. "Who are the *condemned*?" I shouldn't know of them, so that's the card i played. Ignorance. He glared at me for speaking out of turn, but then waved it off as coincidence and relaxed. "I've decided upon your punishment. I have felt your power when you tried to leave my lands. I wish for you to summon a spirit for me. One of my own choosing."
I bowed my head and gave my silent thanks for the sentencing. I hated this kind of obedience, but I had promises to keep and i didn't want to die a fucking third time before fulfilling them. "I wish for you to summon forth *The Black Princess.*" (The Black Princess is not quite right. Another phrase that I cannot fully comprehend and so it was simplified enough for my brain to get the most basic understanding of it.)
I was confused by the name, but I immediately straightened up and looked directly at him. "No." The emperor raised an eyebrow at me and I was shocked the words came out of my mouth."The boy is not in any condition to summon forth *The Black Princess* nor are you deserving of her presence." I hissed out.
The Emperor smirked at me and i realized that U.D. had taken over my body. Without permission and without consultation. Just up and took it from me, but it didn't try to smother me and keep me away from control. It just took the controls for the time. "The Nameless," he stressed the insult of a title to U.D. "has sworn to me his service."
"The Boy," U.D. stressed back at him, "will more than likely die in the attempt of fulfilling your service." Well shit. Astral death has just been surrounding me lately...Why? Can't i get a few moments of peace?
"And the death of a Nameless should concern me?" The Emperor asked without any pretense. He would not have been affected by my death in the slightest. U.D. didn't growl in frustration or even say anything in defense of my life. "...If we assist the boy to summon forth *The Black Princess* you must swear to release him with no other punishment no matter the result."
The Emperor smirked and chuckled. "Why should I agree to those terms?"
U.D. smiled with my mouth. "You don't need to agree, but you will also not receive what you desire. We have denied you thus far. We can continue to do so. Power alone will not move us from your path. We offer you a chance at the audience you seek for this boy's freedom. Is that not something you wish to trade for?"
The Emperor was annoyed. It showed on his face and his frustration laced his power as he pressed down on my body with it. U.D. did not resist the power as it became harder to breathing and i felt like gravity was increasing on me, but after a few moments it stopped. "Fine. If it will get me what I desire then I shall accept your terms." the Emperor said.
My body bowed to him and took a few steps back. Immediately I felt darkness touching on my mind and speaking through me, but i fought it and made it stumble in the invocation. "No. This is not happening anymore. We made a promise. Darkness would no longer control me unless i willed it. This goes against our agreement. You will teach me the words and I will speak them. You will not use me like a puppet to speak through and then have me forget the words that have left my mouth."
U.D. spoke to me in my mind. "You are still weakened. The Invocation is far too taxing for you right now."
"You are using my body and my power. All your going to do is numb me to it all, but that doesn't change the fact that I'll be doing it. Either teach me or leave me to him." i snapped. I really was tired of this. I had spent far too long leaving my body in the hands of darkness whenever they decided they needed to help me with something. Not anymore.
U.D. sighed and I felt it embrace me tighter. It accepted my demands and began showing me the method and whispering the words to me. Every word spoken felt like it was tapping into something inside me and pulling it out piece by piece. It wasn't painful as much as exhausting to have these things pulled out of me, but i eventually reached the end of the invocation and the spell circle was complete. There wasn't a grand spectacle of darkness converging or lights flaring or being swallowed. the gate opened and it was as if she simply blinked into existence. From the floor to the ceiling she stood. Her legs were not even visible, so massive was she. Upon invoking her it was revealed to me that *The Black Princess* was a being created from Darkness, but Still of Darkness. A being that had a will of it's own while being a part of a being without one.
The Emperor called out to her with glorified titles and passionate speech, but *The Black Princess* just looked us all over as if we were ants to her. She completely ignored the emperor and when she finally laid eyes on me she "Hmph'd" and waved her hand dismissively at me. Her fingernail was bigger than my entire body and when it touched my i felt nothing physical move. Instead it felt as if she was pushing my soul of out my body with amazing ease. Even my human body felt the effect of my soul leaving it. It was terrifying.
I felt several tethers that anchored my soul to my body snap withing moments of each other and the only reason they did not all snap was because she blinked out of existence as suddenly as she had come into it leaving my soul hanging to my body with just a few holds left. My body dropped without another word and my soul slowly lost my consciousness in the astral. I the human world as sense of numbness and intense daze filled my mind. i could hardly concentrate on anything. Not really a good thing when going to school that day.
When i could finally regain my focus and thoughts it was almost a 8-9 hours later. My soul was more in than out, but i knew it wasn't finished yet. Classes ended and i managed to get home. As i was heading home i finally woke up in the astral and after being checked by the healer of the palace I was brought to the Emperor again. He kept his word and released me without any more punishments and i left his palace. I swore to teleport to the person i was supposed to check on as soon as I was out of the Emperor's land, but i was truly exhausted and the cuts from the Boneyard weren't fully healed yet. As soon as i felt safe I practically fell asleep right where i was.
D.D. Info: Nameless
Darkness demons hold a great amount of pride and reverence for their names. they are not given to them at birth like humans give them to their own children. Instead they are earned through life experiences in a sort of divine revelation. The name they earn speak of who they are. Every syllable earned can drastically change the meaning of their name and thus the identity of the being it belongs to.
One of the greatest punishments any D.D. can receive is to be stripped of their name. Now people might wonder how exactly it's done, but i'm frankly unsure it can be done by most beings. The method is unknown to me, but I know of it's existence for there are mentions of the nameless either through word of mouth, or some books in the astral. Also because i've experienced it myself. The name...just doesn't feel like it belongs to you anymore. it's not something you feel right calling yourself by anymore and a D.D.'s pride is in their name so we refuse to (almost can't) lie about our name.
I've mentioned the social hierarchy in D.D. lands before, but i didn't mention the Nameless because in short. they aren't considered people. To be a Nameless is to be less than trash. All titles, status and everything is gone. The simple fact of being a Nameless excludes them from almost everything upon the discretion of the people in charge. Taverns can refuse to give a Nameless food, drink, or a place to rest in any combination, though it's mostly all three. that applies to all businesses, but some are willing to allow Nameless to buy from them at inflated prices. Most people will refuse to hire Nameless, so mercenary work is pretty much their only bet at a job. They have No rights to land, No rights to property, or any recognized form of it. (so they can have a shack on the outskirts of town or a village, but anyone can tear it down for any reason without fear of being reprimanded.) Pretty much Everything can be blamed on a Nameless. A Nameless can defend a village from feral creatures and be blamed for bringing them with their bad luck. Families can and often do disown the Nameless so as not to be associated to the shameful person.
A Nameless cannot look upon a noble without permission. They cannot speak to a noble without permission. They pretty much can't do anything, but breathe in the presence of nobles, and even that can be commanded to stop until unconsciousness. Nobles can cast them out of their lands at a whim. A nameless's word pretty much means nothing or worse be only seen as lies.
To be put simply. They are considered to be almost nothing until they regain some semblance of a name again. Even after that though the fact of only having a few syllables as a name is considered shameful so even after the 'punishment' is over other D.D's will continue to hold a bias against a former Nameless.
