I saw you mention peppermint oil to handle mice, and since we recently have been visited by the little beasties, I was wondering if you could tell me more about how that works. We have traps out, and we've caught a few, but I want these things GONE, and if peppermint oil can encourage them to pack their lil mousie bags and leave all the faster, then I'd be all for it! Would there be problems using the oil with a dog in the house?
Regrettably, there would be problems with a dog, as dogs are incredibly sensitive to menthol oils. So if you doĀ opt to try this, do it in areas where the dog isnāt going to go.
And the way I do it is I put a couple of drops of peppermint oil on some cotton balls and throw them under places I canāt generally reach but are like prime real estate for mice. So like, under the couch, dark corners under cabinetry, and possibly even pantry spaces. Donāt put them next to any traps, otherwise, youāll drive them away. You only need a very small amount and be sure if there are any kids or people with asthma in your house to ventilate well. Having the windows open wonāt make it any less effective on the mice.
Another thing you can do is try washing the floors with something like Dr Bronner's peppermint oil soap. Itās very strong-smelling stuff, and you only need a little bit, but it has the same effect of turning the floor/air into lava for the mice and (hopefully) driving them back outside.
Again, be very careful with a dog in the house if you choose to do this. Try to keep them out of the treated area for a couple of hours. Best of luck with the mice, itās never fun dealing with an infestationĀ š¬
