Pairing: Keith/Shiro, Dark!Keith/Shiro
Warning: Manipulation, Abuse (Kinda funny to just add this now)
Note: The parallels were super fun to write in this one.
The prod is back.  Every muscle in his body spasms and screams.  Twists him hard against his binds and keeps going.  Heâs beyond making noise.  Unable to plead for mercy.  Finally Keith stops, but the pain in his chest doesnât go away.  Heâs light headed and thereâs a streaking pain.  Keithâs saying something but he canât hear him.  The worldâs fading at the edges.  Everything is slipping away.  He canât hold onâŠ
There is a cacophony of noise all around him, none of it making any sense.  His chest feels like itâs been kicked by a mule, and the whole world looks like itâs been painted in water colors.  Somebody is pouring ink on his surroundingsâŠ
Someone is shining a light in his eyes.  It hurts.  He wants to turn away but canât.  âTakashi Shiroganeâ At least he thinks thatâs what the deep voice says.  He hasnât heard his name mangled that badly in a long time, âCan you hear me?â  He tries to nod, but his head still wonât move. Speaking just produces a cracked sound that might be generously interpreted as a yes.  âBasic cognitive function seem to be intact.  Weâll have to wait until he is more fully recovered to-ââŠ
Keith sounds angry. âWhen will he wake up!â
âGive him time, my prince. Â His condition was dire.â Â The deep voice sounds familiar but he canât quite recall from where.
âI have given you time.  More than enough time, and he still isnât conscious.â  He should say something.  Keith will be mad at him if he doesnâtâŠ
Shiro feels okay. Â Not comfortable, but not in a terrible pain either. Â Opening his eyes he doesnât recognize where he is. Â There is a niggling in the back of his head that tells him he should recognize this place, but he pushes it down. Â If heâs forgotten, he doesnât want to remember.
âAh good, youâre awake.â Itâs the voice from before, and when Shiro turns his head he recognizes him. Â He one of the Galra doctors who treated his wound. Â He must be somewhere in the medical wing. Â Patient room?
âDrink this.â Something is shoved in his face, and heâs temporarily amused to find out the Galra have also invented the bendy straw. Â Heâs got an awful thirst, so he doesnât let the thought distract him from quickly taking a sip. Â He doesnât feel fully quenched when itâs taken away.
The doctor pulls out a tablet and starts clicking away, âWhat is your name?â The doctor asks.
He fairly certain the guy already knows, but he isnât masochistic enough to be sarcastic to Galra treating him, âTakashi Shiroganeâ He answers.
âWhere were you born,â
âHow many fingers am I holding upâ The doctor holds up two clawed fingers.
âDo you know what happened?â
Pain, he remembers so much pain, âI was tortured,â He whispers.
âElectrocuted to be precise. Â I told the prince that your system wasnât strong enough for prolonged exposure, but does he listen to me. No, of course not.â The doctor grumbles, âYour mental functions donât seem to have been effected from the lack of oxygen. Â Thank the Emperor. Â The fit that would be thrown if you came back an idiot.â The doctor finishes filling out whatever is on the tablet and sets it down, âThe prince will be down in a moment. Â Try not to pass out again in the time it takes him to get here. Â You will not like how you are woken back up.â Â With that parting remark, he turns on his heels and leaves.
Thankfully, he doesnât actually feel tired. Â Itâs fairly easy to take in his surroundings while he waits. Â There is the standard unfamiliar technology. Â The hard but serviceable bed and pillow. Â Purple on literally every surface possible. Â Typical in all the ways a room in an alien ship can be. Keith arrives a few minutes, long before he can grow bored.
Heâs surprised, when Keith comes in and there is nothing but relief on his face. Â He expected him to be angry for some reason. Â Keith rushes to Shiroâs bedside and drags him into a hug. Â His arms around him hurt, but itâs the happiest heâs seen him since refusing to fight. Â He dare not break the moment by complaining. Â It still doesnât last.
Keith lets him go and, before Shiro can speak, punches him, âAre you happy now?â Keith yells while Shiro tries to recover from the shock, âYou nearly died.â He raps his knuckles against the electrical burn on Shiroâs chest, making him flinch in pain, âAfter all the work I put in to bringing you back. Â You canât just be grateful. Â You always have to push.â Keith shoves him away, and begins to pace the room gesturing wildly, âRefuse to do as youâre told, and look where itâs gotten you. Â Your heart stopped Takashi.â Keith turns back to him and jabs his burn in emphasis, âThe doctors told me you might wake up a vegetable.â The strength fades from his voice and his face crumples. Â Shiro thinks Keith might cry, âWhy do you do this to yourself?â He asks, pulling Shiro back up to sitting, âWhy couldnât you just do what I asked?â Heâs being hugged again, desperately tight.
âIâm sorry,â Shiro says.
âYou better be.â Keith says, letting him go, âYou arenât allowed to leave me again.â
Keithâs performance has been suffering. Â He didnât notice at first, so obsessed with making sure that his brand new set of issues didnât interfere with his own, but as he has grown more comfortable, heâs started to see outside of himself again. Â Keith was very obviously losing a step.
The first time he asks, Keith just says heâs a bit tired and tells him not to worry about it. Â Shiro doesnât press. Â He trusts Keith to handle the problem now that heâs been made aware others are noticing, and for a while he does. Â He pulls himself back together. Â Watches the other paladinsâ backs, and if he is unusually quiet, well Shiro is to, so he has no room to judge.
Eventually, he starts slipping again. Â Banging into rocky surfaces when precision flying Red. Failing to fully guard Lanceâs back during group exercises. Â Taking one too many hits when solo training with the bots. Â The final straw is when Keith nods off during breakfast. Â Shiro has to intervene. Â Heâs the leader of Voltron, and it would be a dereliction of duty to allow this to progress any further and potentially endanger one of their missions.
Heâs not completely cruel. Â He doesnât insist on speaking with him then and there. Â Even if it still makes his chest tighten to be alone with him, he wonât call him out in front of the others. Â Shiro waits until he can get him alone and pulls Keith into a side room to confront him.
Keith doesnât look good. Â There are dark bags under his eyes, and his whole body seems to be sagging from exhaustion. Â Shiro feels slightly guilty for letting this go on so long.
âHow much rack time have you been getting?â Shiro asks, cutting straight to the point.
âSeven hours,â Keith bullshits him without missing a beat.
âDonât lie to me,â Shiro says, âYou look like a walking zombie. Â How much sleep have you been getting?â He asks again.
âEnough,â Keith replies obstinately. Â Brick walls had nothing on Keith Kogane.
Shiro scrubs at his face, âYou nearly face planted in your food goo this morning.â He reminds him, âIf thatâs enough, Iâd hate to see what too little looks like.â
âIâm handling it, okay,â Keith says, then adds, âYou donât have to worry.â
âKeith, Iâm responsible for this teamâs performance.â The same thing heâd been telling himself when working up to this conversation in the first place, âItâs my job to worry.â
âThatâs the fucking problem.â Keith mutters.
âExcuse me?â He says.
Keith flushes, apparently he hadnât meant to say that out loud, âNo, forget I said anything. Â Iâll go get some sleep. Â Your leaderly duties are satisfied.â Keith makes a break for the exit, but Shiro blocks his path. Â Bodily block the only door to the room.
âIâm not just going to forget it.â He says, letting some of his building frustration leak into his voice. Â Since when had Keith been so unwilling to just tell him what heâs thinking? âExplain what you mean, how is my worrying the problem.â
âThatâs not what I meant!â Keith shouts, âYouâre getting it all wrong.â Keith crosses his arms, in a way that reminds Shiro of giving yourself a hug.
âThen tell me, and I can get it right.â Neither of them are going anywhere until this is resolved. Â Heâs not letting interpersonal issues compromise Voltron.
Keith knows him. Â Knows Shiro can be just as stubborn if not more stubborn than him, when he puts his mind to it. He doesnât try to out wait him. âYou were gone again, Shiro.â Keith starts, then seems to be lose himself on the way to next sentence.
âYou mean when I changed universes.â Â Shiro offers to get him started again.
It does the trick, âYeah, Iâd finally gotten you back, after so long we were together again and things were right.â Keith says, âThen, then you disappeared! Â There wasnât a body, just like last time. Â Poof gone without a trace. Â We-I didnât even know if you were still alive.â Keithâs eyes are somewhere around chest level, but Shiro gets the feeling heâs seeing a empty cockpit, âEven once we found out what happened, space is 99 percent empty. Â Slav calculated the odds of you switching to some place with oxygen and survivable temperature ranges. Â They were astronomical. Â He thought we were bringing your body back for a funeral.â
âI hadnât thought about it,â Heâd been so preoccupied with his own issues and not letting anyone know exactly what happened, it hadnât even occurred to him to wonder what the others had been through, âIâm sorry.â He means the apology. Â He should have realized what his disappearance would have been like for Keith.
âDonât apologize, you didnât do it on purpose.â Keith absolves him off handedly, âBesides, thatâs not the real issue.â
âThen what is it?â Shiro asks.
âI always believed you were alive. Just like after the âpilot errorâ,â He spits the words in disgust, âI knew you were still out there. Â I just had to find you, but this time it doesnât feel like you came back.â Keith takes a deep breath before continuing, âI used to have nightmares about looking for you at the Garrison or in the desert and never being able to find you.â Keith confesses with a sniffle, âThey stopped when you crash landed back on Earth. Â I thought they were gone for good.â Keith reaches up to wipe at his eyes roughly, âThen you went missing and I started having them about the Castle. Â Except this time they didnât stop when we found you. Â Youâre here, but you donât feel like your really here.â Keithâs head is leaning forward, as if heâs trying to hide his face from view, and itâs all Shiroâs fault. Â Heâs the one whoâs been pushing Keith away without proper explanation. Â He the one whoâs been treating his lover like a leper with no real time frame for them to come back together. Â He did this to him.
âKeith,â Shiro says softly. Carefully placing his arms around the smaller man. Keith leans into the hug, fingers clenching in Shiroâs shirt, and head buried against his shoulder. Â He feels dampness where Keith is hiding his eyes.
âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry,â Keith sobs, shaking his head without removing it from its spot, âI shouldnât be telling you this. Â You have your own problems. Â Iâm so sorry.â
âShhhh, itâs okay.â Shiro whispers, gingerly petting Keithâs hair, âYou didnât do anything wrong. Â Everything is going to be okay.â He hesitantly presses a kiss to Keithâs temple, and feels him begin to cry harder.
