recs are hard, bc I don't know what you're looking for, I'll just pick one from a few famous danmei writers i like 😄 皇叔 by 大风刮过 (Imperial Uncle by Da Feng Gua Guo) The story is about the MC trying to find a partner while being embroiled in a political coup. However, less than 20% of it is about political intrigues, 80% of the book is just the MC hanging out with other gay men. It's told from 1st person POV. MC has multiple love interests, and you don't know who MC ends up with until the final chapters. This author has succinct and "classical" prose that's very suitable for historical novels. She has similar sense of humor as mxtx sometimes. 乱世为王 by 非天夜翔 (To Rule in a Turbulent World by Fei tian ye xiang) I somewhat hesitate when I rec feitain, a lot of people who mainly read cnovels by female writers don't like feitian's works. But I think his works still hold up pretty well against other danmei that's about battle of wits and political intrigues, I'd pick To Rule in a Turbulent World over Qiang Jin Jiu. His works feel more grounded and you could see what dynasty in chinese history he used as reference. It's long and the story starts out as "种田文", story that's about economic development, commerce etc, the plot will later expand and become about politics. The plot is the show. The romance is kinda more on the sugary side, no angst. 过门 Through The Strait Gates by Priest Set in modern era, slice of life. Mains are regular people, had their fall out, lived their life, did their personal growth and came back together. It's not one of Priest's most well known works, but you don't fully grasp Priest's range until you read this.
