The Bitmap Brothers: Universe (Read-Only Memory)
I picked this book up last year and have just had a bit of time to finally get stuck into it. Not only is the presentation top notch but it’s also a fantastic read. For anyone who was into Amiga or ST gaming in the early 90s, the Bitmap Brothers was a name synonymous with stylish visuals, incredible music and polished gameplay. They were the ‘rockstar’ developers of their day and were responsible for many of the Amiga’s greatest hits. Think Speedball 2, Gods, Chaos Engine to name a few. Dan Malone’s masterful pixel art alone inspired a generation of computer artists, myself included.
One of my favourite Bitmap games and a bit of an under appreciated gem was Cadaver (and its even better sequel). It took its visual cues from the Stamper brothers classic isometric adventure game Knight Lore but pushed the graphics and gameplay to eleven.

"With a portfolio of drawings to show around he applied to an advert for Palace Software in 1985, which simply said '2000 AD style artist wanted - no previous experience with computers needed."
Sounds about right

Dan Malone — Speedball 2 Brutal Deluxe print
Speaking about the Amiga book, how about a new Amiga artwork by Dan Malone, first one in 20 years! Dan worked at Bitmap Brothers on titles including The Chaos Engine, Speedball 2 and Z.
As you can see, he could teach everyone a lesson or two in dithering and antialiasing.
If you'd like one of the 100 limited edition signed prints, or just the book itself, head over to bitmapbooks.co.uk.
The Day After
Oh, me name is Dan Malone I’ve no place to call me home. I’m an outcast in the land that I was born in. And I’m weary of the load On this long and lonely road. How I hate to face the sunlight in the morning.
Oh the land is rich and wide But hunger walks beside. I’m an outcast in this proud land that bore me. My life is almost done Am…
