Gai sees the ball of orange coming but doesnāt really know what to make of it, so he lets it happen and waits to discover what exactly the boy is running from. An old lady charges into sight from the next alley, waving a slipper in the air and hurling a series of vicious words.
āWoah!ā Instinctively, Gai holds out his arms as a signal to stop. At the sight of his flak jacket ā and also, Gai would like to think, his large, tall stature ā the lady stalls, puts her hands on her hips, and fumes at the boy cowering behind Gai.
Gai offers a sheepish smile and turns to look at the small boy grabbing his calf and peeking round him. A small twinge hits him as clear blue eyes meet his, and Gai could not help but ruffle the blonde hair. They have not formally met, but everyone knows who this boy is ā Yondaimeās son, who is the spitting image of his father. He gives Naruto a small reassuring smile before turning back to the lady.
āMaāam, Iām very sorry for what the boy has done! Please forgive him, and Iāll be glad to repay any damages incurred, or owe you a debt of a favour! My strength knows no end, so whatever you need, Iāll be more than capable!ā Gai puts as much sparkle into his smile as possible, and gives the lady a thumbs-up.
Though not without grumbling, the lady accepts his offer and charges him a reasonable amount for the repair of her broken fence. When she walks away, she doesnāt neglect to hiss at Naruto, but Gai has already turned around to squat and see eye-to-eye with him.
āYouthful one! I can see that your spirit burns bright and energetic! You should channel that fiery energy to uplift others and stride the path of justice, not create havoc for those around you. I believe in you!ā
A mischievous face grins back at him, and Gai can already see in those eyes that thereās no holding this one back from doing whatever he wanted; if heās anything like his father, he would surely grow into a hurricane, a raging wind, that nothing in his way could stand against. Gai pats his head again. āScurry along, now! Donāt cause trouble!ā
