Look, honestly, I don't really like the Danvid ship (I'm more of a Gwenvid shipper) BUT listen:
Imagine an AU where none of the events in the series are canon. David works at, I don't know, a school, and he adopted Max many years ago. One day, he meets Daniel, falls in love, and they start dating. He introduces him to Max, and Max says, "Dad, what the hell? This guy's a total cultist! Look at him!"
David looks at Daniel, who's dressed all in white, with a huge smile, holding an old Latin book with a pentagram on the cover, a stitched leather knife in his left hand, and a bloody knife in his right.
"I don't know what you're talking about! Danny is perfectly normal!"
And so, the typical comedy of "kid hates his stepfather and stepfather hates him and they make each other's lives miserable" begins, except the stepfather is a fucking psychopathic cult member, and the kid has to stop him from killing him and his father, while David interprets Max's rejection of Daniel as childish jealousy and decides to take them all to family therapy and do family activities to bond.
I came up with all this nonsense because today I started remembering what my relationship with my stepfather was like when I was 9 years old.
Now we get along well :) I even called him Dad a couple of times hahaha.
