Engineer and Scout headcannon
Scout isnātĀ completelyĀ illiterate, however he is dyslexic and with 7 siblings his mother also needed to care for, his reading and writing skills never passed a 5th grade level
Upon learning this, Engineer offered to teach Scout how to read and write
Engineer is an extremely patient man he never rushed Scout, even if that meant he barely got any time to himself in his workshop
Scout ended up being the one getting frustrated when he wasnāt learning as quickly as he thought he would. Initially, Scout snapped at Engineer, afraid that the older man believed he was stupid.Ā āSon, do you know long it took me before I built my first machine that didnāt blow up in my face?ā Scout only shook his head.Ā āfive years. It took me five yearā Engineer put a hand on the boyās shoulder.Ā āWeāve only been doing this for a month and you are already making a great bit of progressā Engineer pausedĀ āSon, Iāve never said this before, but Iām damn proud of youā Scout would never admit how much those words mattered to him
After a couple month of Engineer teaching Scout he started improving quite a bit and they developed more of a friendship. Engineer would often tell stories about his childhood and he would listen to Scout ramble about his interest.
Eventually Scout also opened up about how he never had a father and how hard it was to grow up with 7 siblings, Engineer was glad that Scout trusted him enough to vent about his childhood
During one of their days off Scout awkwardly shuffled into Engineers workshop. Engineer smiled when he noticed the boy āhey kiddo, you want to continue working on your writing todayā. Scout shook his head quickly,Ā āno, uh, I was just wonderinā if you, uh, wanted to help me with my batting practiceā
Engineer never had any interest in baseball, but agreed anyhow, because he knew the kid was enthusiastic about the sport
Scout awkwardly thanked Engineer after they came back inside. Engineer, surprisingly, enjoyed it a lot more than he thought he would. Scout was beaming with happiness and pride when the Engineer asked if he could teach the Texan about baseball
one day afterĀ ābaseball practiceā Scout asked Engineer if he had a kid. Engineer laughed and replied that he always wanted a kid but he just never had the time to settle down with anyone
A few weeks later and Scout was leaving Engineerās workshop but paused before he shut the door, He took a deep breath to calm himself.Ā āGood night dad, see ya tomorrowā
Engineer was so overjoyed by being called dad that he couldnāt stop himself from crying
At first Scout would only occasionally call Engineer dad in private but as time progressedĀ ādadā became the only thing he called Engineer
Becoming Scoutās dad arguably made Engineer a lot more dangerous for the enemy team. If he found out someone sent his boy to respawn there would be hell to pay.
That upcoming Christmas Engineer decided that Scout should meet his new grandparents. The entire trip to Texas, Scout was terrified that his new grandparents wouldnāt like him.

Scout never liked Christmas much, he loves his family but the household was always dysfunctional, loud, and stressful, even more so during Christmas. Scout was used to having to scream in ordered to be heard or having his gift stolen by one of his brothers, if he even got a gift at all.
Christmas at his new grandparent house was different, he got to have a real Christmas dinner, his grandparents were interested in what he had to say, and he got brand new baseball equipment
It was the best Christmas Scout has ever had
