Andy Rourke, former bassist for the Smiths, has died.
The musician died May 19 âafter a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,â per a statement on his social media pages.
âAndy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans,â the statement said.
Rourke was 59.
âMay Andy Rourke rest in peace and love,â Todd Rundgrenâs Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
Billy Bragg eulogized Rourke as âa lovely guy and an amazing bass player;â Simon Raymonde remembered him as âa fellow bassist of fine pedigree.â
Rourke played with the Smiths throughout their 1982-â87 run. He was also a member of Freebass and D.A.R.K. and recorded with former Smiths frontman Morrissey, Sinead OâConnor and the Pretenders and toured with Badly Drawn Boy.
His final appearance was in September 2022 with former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr, who remembered âmy mate (as) one of those rare people that absolutely no one doesnât like,â in a statement on social media.
Marr said Rourke âreinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player,â during their time as Smiths.
âWell done, Andy,â Marr said. âWeâll miss you, brother.â
