San Francisco will soon kick cars off one of its busiest thoroughfares when Market Street goes car-free in January 2020.
“San Francisco’s most iconic thoroughfare, Market Street, will go car-free in January 2020.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFTMA) Board of Directors on Tuesday approved the Better Market Street Project to transform the downtown street into a pedestrian boulevard and free up traffic to let buses flow more quickly.
Transit could move 25% faster for 75,000 daily riders, Cristina Olea, the project lead for Better Market Street, told the SFMTA Board of Directors.
Muni-only lanes on Market Street will speed up the F-Market & Wharves streetcar line, the 5-Fulton, 5R-Fulton Rapid, 9-San Bruno and 9R-San Bruno Rapid buses, according to SFMTA planners.
Other bus providers will use curbside lanes that are also used by taxis. Uber and Lyft vehicles are also subject to the car ban.
“The $603.7 million Project has been more than a decade in the making. Under Mayor Gavin Newsom, SFMTA briefly piloted a car-free Market Street, and Third through Eighth streets now have turn restrictions that nudge many vehicles off Market.Â
Better Market Street will start construction in January 2020, with a ban on private cars east of 10th street on the city’s downtown spine. It will restrict commercial loading on the street to certain hours, extend the Muni-only lane from Third to Main Street, widen sidewalks, replace the ancient bricks with new concrete pavers and add a cycle track (sidewalk-level bike lane separated from traffic). Crews will also build a streetcar loop east of United Nations Plaza, allowing the F line to shuttle from Embarcadero to Fisherman’s Wharf.”

“The city of Eindhoven has redesigned a street in the city centre that used to be part of the inner city ring-road. Space that was previously primarily dedicated to moving cars has been re-allocated to walking, cycling and a lot of greenery.”
