Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a curriculum vitae and a resume but here are some tips!

1. A resume is used to apply for jobs and for admission to professional degree programs that highly value work experience. A CV is used to highlight your academic achievements. They are used to apply to non-professional degree programs, fellowships, conferences, and other opportunities within academia. 

2. CV’s put most of the emphasis on academic experience, honors and achievements and de-emphasize work experience. 

3. Resume’s are usually 1 page. CV’s, on the other hand, don’t have a page limit as they include everything that is academically relevant. Although, advanced graduate students and faculty members tend to have 2 versions of their CV: full and abridged. 

If you’re applying to a non-professional master’s or doctoral program you probably need a CV with your application--not a resume. 

It’s important to understand the difference between the two documents so that you submit what the admissions committee is looking for and expecting.
