71 cm blade with 23cm spear point, etched panel, ‘Manufactured By The Wilkinson Sd. Coy. London’, sheet steel hand guard with lapped edges and provision for a sword knot, slab brass ribbed hand grips riveted to the tang. Black leather scabbard with top and bottom brass chapes, the upper with a frog stud, a separate brass ‘diamond’ below the top chape is inscribed ’67’. A spring release stud at the base of the hand grip.
This sword is based on the regulation Pattern 1889 Cutlass, the main differences being the brass grip and the spring lock mechanism to keep the cutlass firmly in its scabbard, and the brass fittings on the scabbard. These are thought to have been privately purchased cutlasses for yachts and other privately owned seafaring vessels.
