I didn’t expect to get re-traumatized by this:
Especially the part where she’s singing, “Rise and shine and give god the glory, glory.” She then continues with the first verse of the children’s song of “Rise and Shine”.
I should have e expected to be re-traumatized by it. I mean, I went to vacation bible school, my first mini cult weekend as a young adult (Teens Encounter Christ) and my second and third mini cult weekend (two Cursillo weekends).
Becka that song to self soothe; that took me back to those experiences and that singing that song. The damn thing is an ear worm and it won’t leave my head.
“But TEC and Cursillo aren’t cults! It’s a weekend and then you leave.”
True. It’s four days of getting up at 6 am and staying awake until 10 pm. Listening to people talk. Engaging in conversations with others. There’s mass.
You get breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You get snack and bathroom breaks. You spend all four days with these same people. And, they don’t want you to talk about TEC or Cursillo to people who haven’t been.
But, you have no free time. No time to work on your crafts, read, or any independent hobbies you might have that can travel well.
You also have no concept of time. Your watches, cell phones and any thing like that, iPads, are taken from you. You’re on “god’s Time.” Any clocks in the rooms are covered up with, “It’s god’s time.” Seriously.
The nurses there tell you when you can take your medicine that’s scheduled for a certain time of day. You don’t even get to keep track of that. Those nurses? They’re nurses, yes, but also there to listen to these same talks and have these same religious experiences.
For the dubious pleasure of calm of this, you pay money to attend. Yeah.
