is there a ttrpg about playing a group of undead spirits collectively haunting a cursed weapon?
THEME: Haunted & Cursed Weapons
Hello there! This is a very specific request! I don't have a lot to recommend for this one, other than perhaps You are a magic sword, which is a business-card game by beatingthebinary.
There are a few different games that felt similar, however!
Unworthy, by GomezWritesGames.
You are a Living Weapon -- an immortal soul forever bound to a deadly tool of death and dismemberment. Your goal: find someone worthy of wielding you--someone that's strong, agile, intelligent. The challenge: you'll need to suffer at the hands of innumerable dipshits along the way.
Dropped into a world of magic, monsters, deadly traps, and nefarious denizens, none of us would last the night. Unworthy gives you and your players a chance to experience the perils of adventure without the pain of introducing a new character every time the dice conspire against you.
I don't know if the weapons in this game are exactly cursed, and you're not all sharing the same one, but with the chance to put multiple NPCs in danger in the endeavor to find just the right wielder, I'm sure plenty of adventurers in-game will view you as cursed. This game was built for the One-Page RPG Jam of this year, so I expect it will be rather quick to pick up and learn!
Spin the Fishblade, by Marshall Bradshaw.
Spin the FishBlade is the GM-less, diceless storygame where players control one fish with a knife by spinning a knife.
It's meant for three to five players to play for one to two hours, telling an outlandish story with some stylized violence. Imagine if Finding Nemo were mixed with an action movie, like Taken, Kill Bill, or Snatch.
Spin the Fishblade is a GM-less game that embraces the combined possession of a single character - in this case, a fish. You could all consider yourselves dead fish ghosts possessing the knife that the fish is carrying! This game involves bringing items to the table that act as loci of power - that is, these items will be symbols of the protagonist's strengths, which will give you an avenue by which you will contribute to the story as you tell it.
Haunted Doll Posse, by K-Ramstack.
You and your compatriots have all found yourselves stuck together possessing the same Haunted Doll. Only one of you can control the doll at a time but each and every one of you needs to accomplish your supernatural spooky Drive. Will you band together as an undead found family or will you fight each other tooth and nail at every chance you get?
This might be the closest I've found yet! You're all ghosts possessing the same object, but in this game, that object is a doll. Your ghosts will differ in origin, positive traits and negative traits, and you'll also have different ghost powers and motivations. Expect to do a lot of jockeying back and forth over what the doll does and where it chooses to go.
Passengers by JAWB.
Passengers is a role-playing game about spirits interfering with the mortal world by possessing humans and harnessing supernatural abilities. In it you control ghosts seeking to complete your goals by possessing the people who live in the world you create.
Passengers is a fairly simple game, that you can probably easily hack, although the idea is that you're typically controlling someone who has a force of will. If you're possessing cursed weapons, you could draw a connection between the weapons and the people wielding them!
Princess With A Cursed Sword, by Anna Anthropy.
PRINCESS WITH A CURSED SWORD is a journaling role-playing game for one player. It requires a tarot deck and can be played in half an hour or more. And it fits on one printed page.
Explore the ruins. Turn over a tarot card and let the game prompts and the card image guide what you find there. Explore stone courts, torch-lit dungeons, overgrown gardens and tattered libraries. Play with a different deck for a different adventure.
Face challenges. Throw coins to find out if the princess staggers and stumbles or succeeds with supernatural prowess. Will the princess give her sword what it wants in exchange for its power?
Find the sword's resting place. What is the princess willing to sacrifice to leave the sword behind? Or will the sword offer her something so tempting she cannot rid herself of it?
This is a solo game, so the number of potential undead spirits haunting the sword is one. That being said, the theming of this game is really beautiful, and the game instructions are very succinct. Because this game uses a tarot deck, expect a lot of your own personal interpretation to be explored throughout the game, allowing you to really lean on the curse of the sword and how it directs the princess.
