"It seems no matter where they go, they'll always have a hand in the underground crime world..." - DW. C.
Brandy (Mafiatale Sans)
- Heās a bit more laid back than the other Mafia brothers and the least likely to anger. He believes that communication can be the solution to most issues.Ā
- He has a really big soft spot for frogs for some reason. Heās even got a terrarium at home for ones heās found that were crippled, and he visits different cities to run frog races and their betting pools every once in a while.Ā
- He spends the most time at Cheaper Than Therapy, most of the time just running the bar. He also manages the hired help with Chardon. Both for the bar and their underground work.Ā
- Heās the most likely to contact their big boss. Communication is his forte, so of course, when the time comes to report to the dark man who runs the entire crime world, itās him who does the talking.Ā
Alster (Mafiatale Papyrus)
- Heās a gentle-monster above all else. Even when getting his hands dirty, he refuses to have a hand in torture himself. He has very defined lines in his ethics.
- If you spot him at Cheaper Than Therapy, heās quite cheery and practically radiates a steady sort of passion. He loves to speak his mind, and carries conversations easily, but the real treat is when he speaks about his hobby.Ā
- Although he spends his time running the underground world and the bar, he has a passion for entomology - the study of insects! He has several books in his library and displays of exotic bugs, even from different AUs! He loves gushing about his favorite topic.
- He usually never swears as a sign of respect to himself and his image. If he does, something is likely very wrong, or youāve pissed him off beyond mercy.Ā
- He and Brandy will have heated debates on which species is better - amphibians or insects - but more often than not, Chardon will interrupt, stating that his beloved cat trumps all of them.Ā
Jack (MafiaFell Sans)
- He enjoys breaking kneecaps, because honestly, thatās what his night job calls for, but heās pretty stuck on the idea of being a gentle-monster when he can outside of work.
- Heās a certified himbo. He flirts real well sometimes - he knows what his voice can do - but there are times where he just forgets he has brain cells and how to use them.
- Heās huge on baking in his spare time. Heās been the judge of cookie contests before, and been the champion 3 years in a row. His signature cookies are his snickerdoodles. A recipe that he guards jealousy and was passed down from his Ma.Ā
- Heās got a strong opinion on fate. Itās not something you can ever avoid. He has first hand experience on just how narrowly fixed a path of life can be.Ā
- Heās the laziest of the four in terms of work, but still manages to get things done. Heās at Cheaper Than Therapy the least often, but whenever he is there, heās usually up for a drink with anyone companionable, or doesnāt want to be bothered at all. No in between.Ā
Chardon (MafiaFell Papyrus)
- Heās uptight, to put it bluntly, and his expectations for everything he consumes or buys are of top quality and nothing less. He enjoys the finer things in life, but every once in a while, heāll indulge in guilty pleasures that remind him of his less fortunate childhood.
- He handles most of the organizing of all their underground work but is also in charge of keeping track of which drinks make it onto their menu. Nothing of a quality lower than his high expectations is allowed so long as heās here.
- Heās got a special drink for every occasion - holidays, charity events, birthdays? Heās got one for every birthday heād celebrate, and if you donāt have it, heāll bring it himself.Ā
- He and his brother will have heated debates, sometimes during work hours, and if they start getting too stubborn, theyāll pull in customers and ask them for their opinion.Ā
- He has a cat named Mr. Whiskers! Who is spoiled just as much as Doomfanger is. Anyone who dares to ruffle a single tuft of fur on him is sent to their doom.
The fandom's collective reaction to the genocide Sasuke experienced (committed by his own vile bother, who also put Sasuke through two horrific torture-sessions, the second of which nearly took his life) as a child reeks of an inconceivable pettiness that youād seldom notice across Fandoms (they treat him as though heās an entity that exists in reality, who torments them); so they write all sorts of horrendously conceived Fan-Fictions that they stuff up with peak masturbatory content to make the manga all better (no, they subject the mangaās best parts to utter ruination and engage in vicarious sexual encounters to feel deeply pleased). Unfortunately, they bring this same intensity to Fan-Fictions, which showcase the āmental traumasā they suffered at a cartoonās hands, so itās quite impossible to locate decently written ones that grant a definite perspective to Sasukeās side of things, as well.Ā
The most delightful approach that the Fandom takes is that it tries to project its own middle-class issues onto the victims of war-crimes; so you can tell that the results ... arenāt pretty. So here are my recommendations: these are the best Sasuke-Centric Fan-Fictions that Iāve come across, and they donāt focus onĀ āpairingsā. (I apologize, Sasuhina-shippers, but Sasuke wonāt ever throw Hinata a bone nor would he āopen up to herā, a favorite trope among these shippers.)
Here are my three best picks from a mountain of Sasuke-Centric Fictions that are free of pairings that involve him and focus on the political aspect of his character, which intimately defines him in Canon. Click and find out. (Oh, the suspense!)
Iām messing with you guys. Thereās no suspense. I simply donāt like long-posts on my profile, so the cutting tool works for me. Anyhow, onwards and forwards!
Hymn of the Forsaken by ctt
Elegy of the Wronged by ctt
Murasaki by Daastan Go
The first two break-away from canon after a certain point (I wonāt reveal which points), and they do so in a straight-forward manner. Basically, they get straight to the point and things get going from there; hence, if that's your thing, ctt is your man.Ā
ctt's fictions focus on as to how Itachi was in the wrong in regard to the trauma he inflicted on Sasuke in that he's not even the same person after the massacre and the subsequent tortures; but that isn't illustrated in an exploratory sense, but more in a "this is how it is" sense. This isn't necessarily a terrible thing. It's a different approach in comparison to the last one.Ā
The first two are far more plot-driven than the last one. That's the prominent difference between them. (The first one is on-going and the second one's complete.) Both are good (I like Hymn more; Elegy has some issues), but they handle the topics that theyāve undertaken quite differently: Elegyās focused on Naruto's involvement as a character more; so I, personally, don't find Elegy to be as effective as Hymn.
Hymn is quite different from Elegy as it tackles the idea of myth to explore the fantastical origins of the entire "Curse of Hatred" conflict that started way back in the Sage's time; so thereās a lot of ācalling outā of Hagoromo. The author also does a sort of ātake-downā of Itachiās Canon Characterization, which, while it isnāt anything new for the readers and writers who are critical of Itachi and the decisions Kishimoto took in regard to his character, I found it to be a refreshing approach compared to the sermon-laced writing practices of many Fan-Fiction-ers. In Hymn, heās shown to stand with Konoha and is quite active in the ideological disjunction that always existed between him and Sasuke compared to Elegy. Sasuke's very ... calm and collected, you could say, so your mileage may vary. (I prefer the Taka-esque Kage-Summit Sasuke in Murasaki as KS Arc is my most favorite Arc in Shonen and Seinen.) Hymnās Sasuke is a part of the long conflict; so If thatās what you're looking for, the first oneās is your ticket!
The third one by Daastan Go (Iād just refer to him as Go) is an Epic-Length Fiction; hence, it doesnāt get to theĀ āpointā that quicklyāif thatās the only aspect you look for in Fictions. It isnāt entirely plot-driven; no, it treads very closely toĀ ācharacter-driven narrativesā. In fact, it commits to theĀ ācharacter studyā side of writing; so it remarkably endeavors to explore the very idea of Itachi as a psychopathic prodigyāin-depth. The fictionās more along the lines of a study of Sasukeās and Itachiās characters and the strange relationship that defines their so-called brotherhood; so it truly doesnāt prioritize plot.Ā
This isnāt a pro-Itachi Fan-Fiction (people might think of it that way during the early Arcs) as itās quite metaphorical in the manner in which it approaches the characters; so many things arenāt madeĀ ācrystal clearā to you; youād have to read between the lines; and itās theĀ ālittleā things that matter in the end, not the ābigā things; hence, Itachiās treatment of Sasuke isnāt as explicit as most would like to imagine, but I enjoyed this approach more than the previous two. (Sasukeās more talented of the two in canon, but heās consistently undermined by his brother in varied ways.)
Goās narrative thatās AU is also deterministic by nature, so cause and effect are felt more palpably than most of the endeavors that focus on the brothers.Ā It's the same world as the story follows the spirit of canon rather than canon. The world's quite feudal and is rife with para-military forces, state-sponsored terrorism, inter-clan and state politics, prostitutes and much more. The Uchiha Clanās leadership, too, is granted a voice, strength, and purpose.Ā
The charactersā humanity (yes, our flaws are a part of it) is well-realized, so donāt go into this expecting anyĀ ānicetiesā. Basically, Sakuraās obsession, Hinataās weakness, and Narutoās hysteria are key elements of their characters that are elaborated on against an expansive socio-cultural and -political plot that concerns the Uchiha Massacreāitās handled in a different manner from canon, but it happens regardless.Ā
Tsunade, Danzo, and the two Elders are deeply embedded into the plot-threads. Taka's greatly involved and elaborated on. Each Taka member has a past that links the member to Sasuke. Sasuke's very similar to his Taka self, so if you disliked that Sasuke, you should avoid this at all costs. Itachi's, on the other hand, been offered a commanding position in Leafās Military as he's a zealot supporter of Leafās dogma: he outranks Sasuke by a pretty fucking big margin, so you can imagine how that would translate into his nigh-narcissistic bend and approach to control Sasukeās life.Ā
This fiction's very different from Hymn and Elegy in its approach to the conflict between the Uchiha Siblingsāthat how deep-seated it is. Clan politics are a grave threat in Murasaki. A very real threat that doesnāt simply exist in the background like a hazy decoration (in many a Sakura- and Naruto-Centric fiction which are written as long-winded āfuckingā tales with even less merit); however, this one demands patience, so if youāre not patient and a reader who reads Fan-Fictions whilst about fifty other tabs are open, forego this altogether. It demands a lot of attention to piece things together.Ā
Anyhow, thatās my tiny list. I hope you like my picks, because thatās all Iāve got.
