SITE TIMELINE
It's time for a sneak peek at CTF's site timeline! Below are all of the major events that may have impacted your characters over the last 12 years.
FEBRUARY 2023
In the early morning hours, the power goes out in Chicago. With limited ability to communicate the panic is slow to build, as most assume the blackout is a local issue that will be resolved shortly.
MARCH, 2023
A series of storms and natural disasters begin to occur worldwide. It is now clear that something larger has occurred— something that no one may be able to fix. Chicago sees a sudden and early heatwave like never before.
APRIL, 2023
A small group bands together to form a settlement in the open land where the suburb of Crete, Illinois used to exist. The Garden, as it is named, leans heavily on community participation and respect for nature. As The Garden grows, it is rumored in the greater Chicago area to be a utopia in an otherwise harsh landscape.
JANUARY, 2026
Supplies begin to dwindle in the greater Chicago area. Looking to pool and protect resources, another settlement called Fort Armour forms on the south side of Chicago. It’s led by a military commander who rules with an iron fist, and is heavily armed.
OCTOBER, 2028
Harsh weather patterns and diminishing resources continue to plague survivors, resulting in a stark increase in crime and violence. Those survivors who don’t live in a settlement, (commonly referred to as Wastelanders), frequently attempt to steal resources from established settlements.
DECEMBER, 2030
A harsh cold spell spurs a wave of sickness, and the population numbers dwindle. In a desperate attempt to find a method to communicate with established settlements and trade medications and other necessary resources, a third settlement called Wrigley Post is formed in the heart of downtown Chicago.
SEPTEMBER, 2031
Survivors in the Wrigley Post settlement succeed in finding a radio signal. They begin to put out calls to other settlements and Wastelanders, hoping to make contact. Unfortunately, they are met with static and silence.
FEBRUARY, 2032
Hearing rumors of the radio signal, the council members of The Garden manage to obtain their own working radio. They choose to hide this from the rest of the settlement, as its use is contrary to the settlement’s stated values. It’s only a matter of time before a few community members learn this secret, sparking tensions between those who are aware of the radio’s existence.
APRIL, 2035
Present day.
The Garden
TLDR: A secular, utopian settlement with a strong leaning towards Communism, led by a Council of seven leaders. Everyone is given a role to play in furthering the community as a whole. Secretive and restrictive in the name of “the greater good”.
In April of 2023, a group of climate activists decided it was time to form a safe community in the face of the recent Blackout and natural disasters plaguing the planet. They made the trek from the heart of Chicago to Crete, Illinois – a suburb of the city boasting expansive farmland and room to grow. They named their settlement The Garden, an ode to the Garden of Eden.
Although The Garden’s population was once small, by 2035 it’s expanded to include 150 residents. The settlement is structured like a commune, wherein each resident holds a pivotal role in keeping the community functioning. At the head of the commune is The Council – a group of seven residents who make all major decisions for the settlement, including assigning each resident to their job at age sixteen.
RESIDENTS ARE ASSIGNED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING JOBS:
Enforcers: Carry out the law within the settlement and protect The Garden from other settlements and Wastelanders. They are assigned to a specific post (gate guard, external patrol, etc.), usually for life. Farmers: Responsible for tending to the expansive farmland, which produces food, medicine, and essential ingredients for many other goods used in the settlement. Makers: Create the necessary goods (such as clothing, soap, etc.) to keep The Garden functioning. Transporters: Deliver all supplies and goods to peoples’ homes and coordinate expeditions to bring in new supplies. Medics: Responsible for treating all physical ailments in the settlement, from minor to life-threatening. This is the smallest job group. Teachers: Some educate the residents who are under 16, while others specifically train residents for their assigned jobs once they reach age 16. Laborer: Build and maintain the infrastructure and essential systems in the settlement. This is the largest job group.
Adults are expected to work a shift of five days on, with two days off per week. Days off are staggered so that each job is tended to throughout the week with full coverage.
The structure of the settlement has yielded impressive results – The Garden has managed to sustain a small surplus of goods, meaning most of its residents are in good health and are protected from the dangers beyond the settlement’s gates. However, not all residents can turn a blind eye to the lack of freedom within The Garden’s confines.
Despite its insular nature, The Garden has gained a reputation as a utopia in a post-apocalyptic world – a reputation that may put its safety at risk. Perhaps this is why The Council has secretly obtained its own working radio, to listen for outside communications about their sacred oasis. As of 2035, only The Council and a select few others in The Garden know of the radio’s existence, though it’s unclear how long this secret can be kept.
THE GARDEN'S CORE VALUES:
No Waste: Strictly enforced, which is why all food is delivered directly to households daily, and other goods are delivered on a weekly basis. Any surplus is collected and redistributed or reused/recycled. Community above Person: The community is able to thrive only because everyone contributes in their daily work. There is no form of currency in the settlement, but instead people benefit from the contributions of others. Respect for Nature: The council looks down on the use of technology or attempts to return to the way society used to be, despite their secrecy surrounding the use of radio. They believe the current state of the world is an intentional “reset” by Nature itself. Privacy: The Garden Council keeps communications with other settlements minimal, and tries not to disclose much about how they operate with other settlements or Wastelanders. Citizens are forbidden from communicating with those outside The Garden.

PLOT
Early in the morning on February 16, 2023 the power went out. Everywhere, all around the globe, all at once. It’s been twelve years since that day, and the whole world has changed.Â
Nobody knows how or why the Blackout happened, but it’s completely changed everything and everyone. Soon after the Blackout came the extreme weather patterns, then the sickness, and then the waiting. Waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the power to come back on, for things to go back to normal.Â
We’re still waiting.
PREMISE
CARRY THE FIREÂ is a mature, post-apocalyptic roleplay set in the year 2035, based around the remains of what was once Chicago, Illinois. Humanity has been shattered, and the remaining survivors have been left to put the pieces back together again. They have come together to form settlements, bastions of hope in an otherwise bleak period of darkness. Some want to return to the way things were, and others have opted to take advantage of the chaos to rebuild the world in their image.Â
How have you changed, when forced to face this new world? What compromises do you make, when given the choice between feeding your family and starving? Who would you be, if given the opportunity to remake yourself, to start from scratch?
