Another bit of baffling Changeling: The Dreaming lore, from C20:
Following the Soviet Union’s successful launch of an artificial satellite towards the end of the decade, Glamour slowly trickled from the Autumn Realm back into the Dreaming, as humanity began to envision the possibilities of exploring space.
We started to imagine the possibility of exploring space long before Sputnik 1, lol. According to Wikipedia, the first known story about visiting the moon dates back to the 2nd century, and during the Enlightenment people really started wondering about life on other worlds. People wrote books about visiting the moon in the 17th century! Space exploration was a well-established theme in comic books, pulp stories, film, and television in the early to mid 20th century.
Banality’s grip on mortal minds eased as the space race intensified, but it required something truly extraordinary and monumental to ignite the Glamour into an explosive crescendo. On July 20, 1969, humanity witnessed the moon landing live on television, and all of the hope, fear, and wonder of the previous decade burst forth.
In reality, a lot of US citizens actually disapproved of the program, believing it to be a waste of money. This idea that the moon landing united all of humanity is a manufactured myth. I'm not saying this event wouldn't have produced Glamour, but it wouldn't have been quite this spectacular.
Also like, if the moon landing was powerful enough to open the Dreaming, why didn't it also change the Dreaming? Why are there no astronauts or aliens? Why are there no retrofuture realms? It seems a little strange that these things are absent.
