Londonite

Named after a geology professor at Oklahoma University rather than the capital of the United Kingdom if this very rare mineral only found in a few pegmatites in Madagascar. These are the last remnants of magmas that often freeze to produce larger crystals, after having concentrated all the rarer elements that the entire magma distilled out of the crust or mantle that didn’t fit into the crystal structure of the more classic feldspars, micas or quartz. It was only discovered in 2001, and the name was awarded in recognition of David London’s work on explaining the formation and crystallisation of pegmatites, and indeed his much perused Special Publication of the Mineralogical Society of Canada graces my bookshelf and those of most serious gemmologists or mineralogists. The formula is complex ((Cs,K,Rb)Al4Be4(B,Be)12O28), and the colour ranges from white to yellow or yellow green like this one. The mineral is hard (8 on Mohs scale), but too rare to really be faceted for any but the best heeled collectors. It is part of a solid solution series with Rhodizite at the other extremity, and examples that have not been analysed to prove which they are must be sold labelled as both. Many examples contain patches of both within the same crystal making distinction even trickier. The 3.0 x 3.0 x 2.2 cm sample here came from the Antandrokomby pegmatite, the type locality from which it was first described.
