Dear Erik,

            I’ve had the privilege of watching people grow all around me, flourish in their knowledge and self exploration.  I cannot begin to express my gratitude that my students, friends, family, came to me and allowed me to help them grow, and I only wish that you would have stayed to teach with me.  However, you went your way, with the belief that you could accomplish something special, and though I always argued and fought, I can almost say that I’m glad you did.  Life is, and always will be, about making yourself happy, and whatever it is that you found within the corners of your mind so long ago seemed to make you exceptionally so, and you decided to follow it.  For that, I’m grateful; you found your place in this world, and I found mine, trying to help others whilst continuing to press to understand you.

            I can’t say I ever did figure you out, but I won’t say I didn’t try.  Because you were, and are, a very important and prominent figure in my life.  You were a friend, even through our roughest feuds, and you will continue to be so, regardless of our disagreements.  I’m sorry that we never did find a solution to our disputes.

            It is during my time of death that I realise how remarkable of a thing life truly is, and how easily we dwell on our past.  As I was laid and immobile for the last of my days in a bed, however immobile I always have been, I found myself regretting and questioning.  I suppose that is our continuous condition: we will never wholly forgive or understand what we are given until the time comes that we perish.

            I was stuck on our relationship the longest, however.  Consider this a final apology and farewell, old friend.  I only hope that I was able to sway your belief of superiority enough in my time on this earth that you’ll follow a clearer path when I’m gone, as I won’t be there to physically remind you of the good in us all.

                      And I forgive you, though I may never hear you say sorry.
