one of our garden skinks sunbathing :)
Elegant Snake-Eyed Skink (Cryptoblepharus pulcher).
Small skink minding its own business. Don’t feel confident to properly identify.
Cryptoblepharus
18/05/22
This is the amazing Cryptoblepharus cognatus. These skinks live on the rocks along the shoreline of various landmasses around the Indian Ocean, and there has been some pretty awesome recent research showing how they dispersed across such vast distances (10.1098/rspb.2018.2575). They are very capable swimmers, even in saltwater. This individual was found on a tiny sandbar with a few rocks that some might call an ‘island’ (Nosy Ambariobe) off the northwest coast of Madagascar in April 2019. . . www.markscherz.com www.squamatespod.com . . . . . . #skink #lizard #animals #animal #wildlife #nature #zoology #herpetology #herps #reptile #reptiles #lizards #Cryptoblepharus #Cryptoblepharusboutonii #Cryptoblepharuscognatus #herpers #biology #Madagascar #species #science #photograaphy #naturalworld #NosyAmbariobe https://www.instagram.com/p/B4N9VwRB6fe/?igshid=1wxbxyi1mxu3y

#2187 - Cryptoblepharus pulcher - Elegant Snake-eyed Skink
AKA Ablepharus boutoni, Cryptoblepharus boutonii, Cryptoblepharus virgatus, Cryptoblepharus clarus, and various combinations of those.
A common skink in Sydney's gardens, usually on vertical surfaces, but also found in a broad swathe down the Eastern end of Australia, and a disjunct population along the southern coast from Adelaide to Western Austalia.
These skinks are known to raid ant trails, dashing in to rob worker ants of food items they're carrying. They also eat winged ant alates.
Females probably lay a clutch of 2 eggs.
Mascot, Sydney, New South Wales
#671 - Cryptoblepharus buchananii - Buchanan's Snake-eyed Skink
The most common of the garden skinks around Perth, and most of SW Australia. Distinguished from the other likely candidates by the crenulated edges to his or her banding, relatively large size, and the fused eyelids that give the genus its name. Can also come in shades of brown. Quite often seen on tree-trunks, where it can run for cover under bark or into holes. Agile enough to catch flying insects in a leap.
