“DE EDO SUD TOVOUK GENERAL SCALES!”
When I decided to start drawing Star Fox characters last summer, one of my goals was to redraw those that didn’t turn out so well last time I did in 2016. As such, General Scales and his Sharpclaw Army. The last time I drew the tyrant of Sauria, he looked rough. Really rough. I was never happy with how he looked back then and this was a great chance to try and fix that. Of course, it was a real struggle.
I have little experience drawing reptiles, the previous pieces in this Star Fox saga are all I have. Thus a whole piece consisting of dinosaurs proved to be a real challenge. The shapes, the posing, getting the uniforms to look right, it all came together to become something that felt like a chore to work on at times. It kinda put to rest my plans to draw the other dinosaurs tribes, although I may try that again one day…
I didn’t need to do much with the designs. The Sharpclaw all have different interpretations of their standard uniform but I didn’t stray too far from the original. I just need to not draw Saiyan armour. Scales himself had two major changes, the first one being that I gave back his left hand. I don’t know why he only has one hand, but I prefer him with two. The other change was to his headgear; he appears to be wearing chainmail with a helmet over the top of it, but such a small helmet felt like it lacked presence. I modelled his new headpiece on a samurai kabuto - the same overall shape, but bulkier and more intimidating.
