You can’t cure ‘stupid’. The explanation for that is it is a habit. Habits are virtually impossible to break. One day I woke up to realize that while there may be no cure for stupid- if one taught a child how to reason – at the very beginning of his cognitive formation- THAT would also be a habit. And that habit of reason, equally unbreakable, could initiate and an irrevocable renaissance. The name of the game is ‘Crown of Creation’ it is meant to be used as a bedtime story. We are told by its creator that the players of the game will be three members of a family, there is a mom, a dad and their child, the nuclear basis of civilization, and in this game, which is a game of life, the parents will be helping the child to play the game, coming together to solve puzzles, – but ultimately the focus is on the child, establishing first habits, what you do and learn is what you become, finding through play, answers to puzzles and the gift of rational thinking that will follow the child through life itself. Goin’ on a Treasure Hunt … One day a man set out to create a game, a treasure hunt… What is the game? What is the game! Why, it’s a treasure hunt, a treasure hunt that’s like no other… What is the treasure? What is the treasure! More to be revealed anon, but before we begin, let’s take a look at the game from the outside, its external appearance and follow on with something of its context, something of the what and wherefore. First let us look upon the Treasure Hunt’s outer frame. The game’s enclosed within a leather folder, to be opened by a metal clasp, an interrobang. An interrobang to open it ?! And what is that, you’ll likely hear somebody ask. And here’s an answer: ‘An interrobang is a binding that ties a question to an answer, a ligature of ‘ what’ to ‘that,’ of ‘cause to an effect’ ?!’ An interrobang’s the drawn breath and exhaled exclamation of a mental revelation, the ahah ?! moment of Galileo, gazing through his telescope, when he first sees the moons of Jupiter, or of Darwin, aboard the HMS Beagle, as he examines those Galapagos finches’ beaks. In every treasure hunt you’ll likely come across a villain. There’s one of sorts herewith, not physical but comes in the form of a message from the many casuists who like to tell you that the universe exists only to make a fool of you, no matter what you try to do. The interrobang’s a reminder, tying grapheme to a glyph, a reminder of those moments that tell you that this simply isn’t so. And now we’ll leave the treasure chest awhile, buried beneath the sands of some island hiding place, while we discuss some context on its genesis. Jefferson Airplane’s fourth album — “Crown of Creation” — is the pinnacle of their creativity, methinks. Though not as popular nor as rocking as the studio follow-up, “Volunteers,” nor sprinkled with timelessly iconic gems like White Rabbit and Plastic Fantastic Rabbit, both from “Surrealistic Pillow,” every song on CoC is brimming with musical and lyrical inventiveness and interest. Beginning with the quietly beautiful and poignantly sad Lather and ending with the devastating nightmare of The House on Pooneil Corners, CoC explores themes of love, time, innocence, mental illness, drugs, nuclear holocaust, and alienation. Matching pace with the growth of their lyrics — which were becoming more sophisticated without pretension — Jefferson Airplane’s mastery of the instruments — especially Jorma Kaukonen’s guitar chops and Jack Casady’s bass lines — reaches new heights. Listen to Star Track, If You Feel and Crown of Creation for three examples of music that just works so well together sonically. Grace’s singing has also entered a new realm. Triad — written by David Crosby and rejected by his former brand, The Byrds, as being too racy (subject = ménage à trois) is just gorgeous as rendered by Slick. She shines in harmony on Ice Cream Phoenix and in solo on the outstanding and acidic Greasy Heart and in subdued spoken plainness on Lather. She really is at her most psychedelic peak on this album. The album also features one of the first all-electronic recordings on a rock album with Chushingura. A short experimental piece it was composed by the drummer Spencer Dryden and is purported to be named after the same-titled 1962 Japanese samurai film. (A great movie, BTW, based on the historical story of the 47 Ronin.) “Crown of Creation” has the remarkable ability to both feel of its time and feel timeless.
