A few infrared images from January's trip to the Moab area. These were captured on a couple of hikes off of the Potash Road, ~1500' below Dead Horse Point, but about 600' above the Colorado River. The sheer towers and cliffs are Wingate Formation (~200 million years ago) whilst the rounded, softer underlying sandstone that we were walking through and over is from the Organ Rock Formation, which is about 260 million years old. More grey skies with rain and snow equals more opportunity to re-visit old astro-data. In this case, M 42 | Great Orion Nebula & NGC 1977 | Running Man Nebula, captured 4-Dec-21. I've learned some new processing steps and have new software tools at hand, as well. This version of the Orion Nebula explodes with the red of excited hydrogen molecules. The use of a special nebula "booster" filter -- and much processing -- helps bring out the details. For those that might ask, I added no color to the image. In fact, I reduced the saturation so that it looked less like the evidence of a crime scene! (No aliens were harmed in the production of this image!) Klondike bluffs region of arches national park. On display, for your viewing pleasure and intellectual edification, many tens of millions of years of sand, silt and mud deposition then solidification with eventual sandstone erosion. The action begins some 300 million years ago when a shallow see evaporated leaving a vast deposit of salt. Seas came, seas shrank, swamps appeared, to be replaced by vast ergs: huge sand dune deserts. The large salt dome under a good part of what is now Arches national park, eventually began bulging and fracturing the hundreds of feet of sandstone that had become the landscape. In this photograph in the distance, you can see that fractured Slickrock member of Entrada sandstone that gives us so many of the Arches and fins of the Park including tower arch, which is below the largest tower in this image. Leading up to the bluffs we can see the Tidwell member of the Morrison formation in brown and closer to the camera, the lighter Moab member of the Curtis formation.
