Initially, yeah. You need to declare that moment to get the ball rolling.

Once I declared “Okay, I and whoever else are doing this”, it took about a year’s worth of pre-production between that decision and posting the first page. Research, brainstorming, artist recruitment, etc. Would’ve taken less time if Life didn’t get in the way, but either way the pre-production stage will and does take time.

It’s best to have a (loose) launch date in mind. I knew I wanted 2012 to be the Year of the Gorilla, so I made sure the site was launched before January 1. Sarah and I barely made the deadline, getting things done right in the middle of Christmas vacation, but dammit we did it.

I admit to playing GRG very fast and loose. (Art imitates Life.) I normally prefer having things as pre-planned as possible, but between working with others and Life you can only do so much. If you’re setting yourself for a weekly update, all you can do is make sure it gets out on that day. (And if it doesn’t, well, take a salt tablet and get it out when you can. The only people who will complain are those who you’d rather not please anyway.)

Furthermore, I admit that my writing productivity is incredibly erratic. Sometimes I write half an issue out in one wondrous burst, other times (like with this upcoming page), I cobble something together just before Kelsey’s On Time deadline. I won’t defend it, and I certainly don’t endorse it. Brian Michael Bendis champions the idea of writing something every day, but I don’t have the capacity to do that. Not yet, at least.
