Opteryx are one of the many proto-bird species native to Beatha, filling the same role as corvids do on Earth being highly intelligent, opportunistic hunters who live in small flocks that sometimes join up and communicate with larger flocks of opteryx. Their black irresdescent feathers are used for mating displays. They are known to be quite veracious despite their small size and are highly food motivated. Some people try to keep them as pets, and they are easily trained because of their intelligence and highly food motivated nature, but the moment the food runs out, opteryx are liable to fly the coop very quickly. They are known as ‘banshee birds’ because well, their shrieking is very loud and sounds a bit like a high pitched, screaming woman. Why anyone would want to keep these flying devils is beyond me but people do keep them.
