Doodlebot is BACK! I needed some pure playtime in the #creativesandbox this morning, so I pulled out a postcard and started to doodle. I asked myself my favorite question, “What if..?” (That’s from #creativesandboxway Guidepost #6, btw. 😊) What if I did something *different* from what I would normally do? At each juncture, make a *different* choice! 🖍 This #doodle is the result! It has elements of things I’ve done before (knots, repeating patterns, line quality, and of course, Doodlebot), but the lines intersecting the knot doodles without actually touching them—that’s new. And the knot doodles not being “complete,” but sort of dangling in space—that’s not typical for me. 🖍 Try going against the grain today! Do the opposite of what you’d normally do, or something different from your usual maneuver. See what happens. Inspired by @letssummerize’s #100dayproject, I decided to practice “school kid” today. The other side of this sheet is 16 attempts, and here are 9 more. By the last one I was starting to get fairly quick and fluid. I don’t know if he reads young enough to be a school kid—second to the left at top proportions read as younger—but I’m getting there. 🖍 @evalottchen says to draw something 50 times in order to own it. I love practicing visual notes to Jordan’s podcast because he A) Gets such fascinating guests; B) Does a great job interviewing them; and C) Has terrific show notes that I can crib for my Visual Notes™! 😅 No joke—learning a new skill is hard! I’m juggling multiple skills here, each of which needs a lot of work: 🖍 - lettering (not just well, but also quickly! Gahhh!) - drawing (again, not just drawing, but also quickly! Gahhh!) - capturing IDEAS quickly, and translating them into visual metaphors - listening, listening, listening, and holding onto content that is rolling by while I’m trying to capture content that *just* rolled by 🖍 It’s what I imagine juggling 5 balls at a time must be like. (And since I can’t even juggle ONE ball, well, you get the idea!) 🖍 I’m not aiming to become a professional graphic recorder. My goal is to bring more visuals into my workshops and trainings. So I’m not “cheating” by using podcasts to practice with. She got very smart about overlapping THREE niches, and combined the publisher’s efforts with her own, including giving away a TON of books! 🖍 Meanwhile, I’m still climbing the mountain of this visual notes thing, and it feels like it’s getting harder, not easier. 🖍 I remember this sensation from when I was a dancer, when I started out learning calligraphy, when I was learning to sing jazz: one day you might have a success, and feel like you’ve made improvement, but then the next day it feels like you’ve slid back to where you started. 🖍 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Or maybe 1 step forward, 2 steps back! That’s what it feels like! It’s the name of the game when learning a new skill. 🖍 I just remind myself that this is part of the process. In fact, I’m not *really* backsliding. There will *always* be good days and bad days, stronger efforts and weaker ones. The point is to pay attention to what I need to work on (ahem—paying better attention is a good place to start!
