I Make Sure That the Bassline Isn't Playing the Exact Same Notes As Everything Else ...
I'll offer up what I do with my basslines. Basically, having it hit when the kick does is good advice, I do that very frequently.
But you don't always have them hit together, having the bassline's notes playing when the kick isnt is good, as is vice versa. I also make sure that the bassline isn't playing the exact same notes as everything else.
I usually drop it one octave from the lead, and then shift it up or down by 5 or 7 semitones. This creates a nice chord effect from the interaction of the lead and bass synths.
You can also do stuff with the gate time of the notes. An occasional long note can create a nice groove, just make sure the drums work with it.
