What’s the one writing thing that throws you off track? For me, it’s creating side characters. In first drafts, these people are faintly drawn placeholders but as my drafts change and grow, they seem to always take over, and I find myself having to rein them in! . . . One good piece of advice I was told early on in my writing journey is that while these secondary characters are not the main focus, they still must have some kind of arc. A hope. A dream. A goal. I’ve found that this helps me when I’m creating those characters.
