Let's chat Cad! What's your guess as to why Cad decided to open up now (alcohol? Traveler Con ending?) and open up to Yasha? I think it's significant that it was Yasha. I'd argue she's the most accepting / least judgmental member of the M9. Does Cad fear judgement for not really wanting to go back? Or is it because she isn't really one of his 'projects' and thus feels more like an equal to him? Cad is such a mystery to me, so all of those are just wild guesses. Would love to hear your thoughts!
I loved that it was Yasha! To me it felt like a throwback to their earlier easy relationship before Yasha was overtaken by Obann in the King’s Cage. They’d spent some time confiding in each other in the early days of Xhorhas - serious subjects like Cad’s brief death, as well as funny moments where they were both judging everyone else for climbing the giant tree.
So it might have been a bit that he felt Yasha was “healing” and wouldn’t be as burdened with thinking about his perspective, but I also got the sense that Cad has always gotten along well with Yasha, and this was the culmination of him having to take some time to fully regain the easy relationship he had with her pre-The King’s Cage.
Cad opening up now felt prompted by Veth’s situation. She’s trying to figure out how to be at home and be with the Nein (both things she wants), and Cad is in many ways in a similar situation. He has responsibilities at home, and people he loves there, but he has people he loves and things he wants to do with the Mighty Nein too. Cad vocalizing that so soon after Veth openly demonstrated the issue felt related to me.
