Hey my girlfriend is reading fourth wing! What was some of the stuff that made you love it?
Your girlfriend has good taste!
I’m a sucker for dragons, especially when they’re written as sentient main characters and not just animals with telepathy. The fact that each of them had such clear and distinct personalities and each bonded with their rider in a different way really appealed to me and made me care about the dragon/rider relationship.
I also really liked the FMC. It was nice to see a main char who was disabled, with a disability that was written so well, and at no point in the story was her disability magically cured or turned into a superpower or treated as a cheap plot device. For the most part, I found her to be rational, intelligent and relatable, which was a refreshing change from a lot of other stories I read this year.
Yarros’s writing style isn’t the norm for the fantasy genre, and for me, that’s a good thing. I like the casual language and recognizable slang, and I’m a reader who isn’t turned off by infodumping so I appreciated scenes like the morning briefs where we were told info we needed instead of inferring it from other interactions.
And I don’t want to spoil anything your girlfriend hasn’t gotten to yet, but there’s a big, emotional scene toward the end of the book that I totally did not see coming at all. I gotta respect a book that can catch me off guard like that.
