hey guys Liz here with a tutorial on how to make my shiny rod prop

first you will need to download the shiny rod PDF file i will post link to at the end and be sure to print this out at 80% the size (if you print it our full size it will be to big)

the you will trace the PDF onto the material you are using (in my case i used foam but you can also use wood) twice (you will need 2 pieces for later use)

then you will cut out the shiny rod be sure to file down the edges on top to give it dimension as well as clean up the curves 

Next few steps are optional if you want to add LEDS to the prop if not then skip these steps

first carve out a section for the LED battery pack on the very top as well as where the gems will be so they light up right behind the gems

next attach your LEDS I will leave a link to a tutorial on how to do that below

next attach the 2 pieces you have to each other if you are using wood attach with wood glue, if you are using foam DO NOT USE A HOT GLUE GUN IT WILL DAMAGE THE FOAM instead use a craft glue or gorilla glue

after the glue has dried carve out where the gems will be ( Use PDF for size reference and placement) and make sure they are placed right in front of the LEDS so it lights up properly 

next add the gems to the holes (make sure you leave enough room for the red paint on the edges of the holes) and glue them in with what I mentioned above

next paint the shiny rod with Gold, black, red and cream paint ( Be sure to use a reference picture for this step)

Repeat the paint LEDS and gems on the other side and you are done

For Karuta, I’d suggest making the vest and skirt as separate pieces and then sewing them together. Check out this vest pattern from Burda style.  It’s only 99 cents and you can download it once you make an account. (which is free)  When you cut the vest pattern, you’re going to have change the bottom of the vest’s two front panels. Instead of the slight v shape the hem makes, cut out your panels with a straight hem line.  You’ll also need to add about a half to a whole inch to the hem to act as the seam allowance so that you can sew it to your skirt.

For the skirt, see this tutorial. The bottom part of her vest-type dress is just a basic inverted box pleat skirt, so this tutorial should be right on the money.  Also add half to a whole inch to the waist band of your skirt so that you can sew the bottom of the vest to the top of your skirt.

For Saruhiko, I’d say you’re on the right tract in terms of a base pattern.  You could also try using a Men’s pirate costume coat as a base pattern and modify things like the collar and lapels to your needs.  Like this one.

Use these to make tails on your wig, especially if it's a long one.
