Galerii Obrazów Starych Mistrzów światową sławę przyniosła wyjątkowa kolekcja arcydzieł najwyższej klasy. W Dreźnie znajduje się jeden z najbardziej znanych obrazów wszechczasów: „Madonna Sykstyńska“ (1512/13) – obraz Rafaela, który zachwyca odwiedzających stałą wystawę już od ponad 250 lat. Ważną część zbiorów muzeum stanowi włoskie malarstwo renesansowe z głównymi dziełami Giorgione, #Tycjan, #Corregio, #Mantegna, #Botticelli i #Parmigianino. Równie ważne są dzieła malarzy holenderskich i flamandzkich z XVII wieku. Wiele dzieł to prace Rembrandta i uczniów jego szkoły. Ponadto prezentowane jest wybitne malarstwo staroniemieckie i staroniderlandzkie, m.in. #Eyck, #Dürer, #Cranach i #Holbein, oraz wielkie dzieła hiszpańskich i francuskich artystów XVII wieku. Budynek galerii, wybudowany w 1855 roku według planów Gottfrieda Sempera, został otwarty jako jeden z najważniejszych projektów muzeów XIX wieku w Niemczech.
