“De la Rúa in 2001 leaving in helicopter.“ says the tweet in spanish. And it’s funny as hell but OOF we laugh about it now!
I still think about this tweet on the daily. Because I lived through this shit.
You know how in 2001 the US had 09/11? Well we in Argentina (and Uruguay I think?) had “el corralito.”
You know how the economy in the US went entirely into the toilet in 2008? We lived through that 7 years before. We even had to come up with ALTERNATIVE CURRENCY for a while cause credit cards weren’t even working. We had no money lol. It didn’t exist.
Okay well don’t totally quote me on all of this because I’m not an economist, wasn’t following politics that closely (I was literally 12), and I’m a big picture kind of woman. But here’s a little explainer of what happened as I remember it:
So, like, right before our economy went totally to shit (or like very shortly after), that December in 2001 there were riots. Like our country had never seen. People were coming out of the “villas” (google it because it’s too complex to explain, for the sake of brevity let’s say where the extreme poor live) and protesting and eventually they started ransacking supermarkets, stores, just going apeshit. Of course these people were vilified to no end in the media. Our president at the time, de la Rúa, not only quits, but fucking peaces out and leaves the pink house (our version of the white house except the president doesn’t actually live there) from the rooftop in a helicopter.
Just fucking leaves. Goes “figure it out by yourselves.” The footage is incredible. You’re watching it and going “he did what?!” I’m 12, I can’t leave my house for fear of what’s going on outside. I was middle class, probably upper class for the city I lived in, I thought people might storm the gates, you know? The world as I knew it was actively forever changing.
IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!!!! Then the circus starts, we had a new president ON THE DAILY for like 4 or 5 days in a row in those late December days. Until we got one guy to go “fine I’ll be interim president fuck it” and that road led to the Kirchners, which is it’s own world of posts all by itself.
Our president got up and left via helicopter in the middle of a complete social and economic crisis. You wanna make fun of Argentinians? Learn what we have gone through first. Are you a “latinx” born and raised in the US or another “1st world” country? You have no idea what it is like to be us. You might hears stories but you have not LIVED it.
The guy got up and LEFT. He LEFT!!!!!!!!
