sooo I made a playlist for Corintheus week for the prompt 'Rebirth: I was remade just to be with you' and you can listen on Spotify [here].

I was debating to post this at all because like my blog description says, I mostly lurk here. But I've been feeling really inspired by everyone in this little corner of fandom since joining it and have spent an embarrassing amount of time curating perfect songs for this ship without repeating artists more than 3 times and keeping to only a few genres, and I ended up making a 7 hour long, 108 songs, and 84 artists full playlist that you can listen to [here] (it's called 'The Lord's Favorite'). I can't write and I can't make fanart but I think I can make a pretty banger playlist (I mean... hopefully. I did actually spend a good month searching through bandcamp and AOTY and RYM to find new music that was suitable and interesting enough).

But anyway, this little playlist (24 songs, 23 artists) I'm featuring is the last leg of my larger main playlist. I made the main playlist have different stages where it melts into different atmospheres and themes surrounding corintheus (so that means it's made to be listened in order and not shuffled, though I suppose you can do that anyway. It's just probably more cohesive to listen in order). And I realised that this selection of songs was perfect for the rebirth prompt!

The songs:

1. 'Black as Crow' - Rhiannon Gidden - contemporary folk

As time draws near, my dearest dear, when you and I must part / How little you know of the grief and woe in my poor achin' heart

note: we start the playlist in the key of loss and grief.

2. 'IDUMEA' - Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter - avant, Appalachian folk

A land of deepest shade / Unpierced by human thought / The dreary regions of the dead / Where all things are forgot!

note: continuing the tone of loss, this is a hymn about where your spirit goes when you die. I've included this song and others on the main playlist for their religious themes. Aside from the obvious gravitas they add, I also find they add an eeriness especially when they're older recordings and they sound like a dusty taping. This song here is not old, though it's intended to sound so (it was made this year) and it adds a great foreboding feel.

3. 'Who Killed Cock Robin?' - Sarah DeShields - Scottish folk

All the birds of the air fell a-sighing and a sobbing / when they heard the bell toll for poor Cock Robin

note: I plucked a couple country/ folk murder ballads for the playlist, too. I think it's such an interesting genre of music that's really fitting for a corintheus playlist not just because they're about death and crimes of passion, but also because it feels so in keeping with the tone of the sandman, which is about stories within stories. I almost added 'Mack the Knife' by Bobby Darin to the playlist because it's so amazing but I couldn't in the end because it made me laugh every time i heard it.

4. 'I'm Your Man' - Mitski - country folk

You believe me like a god / I'll destroy you like I am

note: although I wanted to make this and my main playlist mostly to share lesser known songs and artists I also put in a dollop of classic and popular songs :)

5. 'Larkspur And Lazarus' - Current 93 - piano driven singer-song-writer poetry, goth

If I could have one wish / As in the fairy tales / I would unmake my past / And rise like Lazarus / And stand in sunlight

note: This song could just as easily be about the death of Dream as it could be the Corinthian. If i could only recommend one song from this playlist it would be this one.

6. 'What Might Have Been' - Regina Spektor - art pop, chamber pop

Living and dying go together / Business and crying go together / Passion and madness go together / Yellow and sadness go together/ Canary yellow, mustard yellow / Yellow tear stains on old pillows / Everyone loves a story / About far, far away

7. 'When Winter Comes Around' - The Lemon Twigs - power pop, chamber pop, folk pop

Go back from where you came / Though you're bound to wake up again

note: can be about the rebirth of either Dream or the Corinthian.

8. 'Blue is the Eye' - Ye Vagabonds - Irish folk

The wind blows the ember, a coal from the hearth / You carry it proudly through ditches and trees / And cross the horizon to lie down and sleep

note: this and song 7 both are about the cycles of nature and how things return and fall away again and again. Like seasons or ocean waves, both the Corinthian and Dream must return.

9. 'Tell Me What Is True Love' - Bert Jansch - baroque folk

Well love is like a little boy / Building castles in the sand / And the higher he builds them / The longer they stand

note: this song is just really sweet to me. About relearning what love is.

10. 'Emerald River Dance' - June Mcdoom - chamber pop

It seems like everyone's so afraid of emotion / 'Cause they can't bear the pain / But the deeper sorrow carves in the heart of your being / The more joy you can contain

note: this is a cover of a song by Judee Sill (see next song) but with the accompaniment of harp! This song is intensely Daniel Hall coded.

11. 'The Kiss' - Judee Sill - "occult-holy-western-Baroque-gospel"

Once a crystal choir / Appeared while I was sleeping / And called my name / And when they came down nearer / Saying, dying is done, Then a new song was sung / Until somewhere we breathed as one

note: okay, actually this is the one song I would recommend if i could only rec one. I think this song changed my brain chemistry when i first listened to it. It's just pure transcendence. Also at this point in the playlist, this and the songs after can probably be considered corinthiel coded if you wanted.

12. 'Sleep On the Wing' - Bibio - chamber folk

Lamb in the fields / With the folds and the clover

13. 'My Red Little Fox' - Sufjan Stevens - chamber folk, folktronica

My love, my queen, my spoken dreams come save me / Kiss me like the wind / Now, I sing it won't you kiss me from within?

14. 'I Have The Moon' - Lush - shoegaze, jangle pop

We have walked in ancient times / And we've been burned for many crimes / We have ended many lives / But we never really died

note: can be about the long history between the corinthian and dream. How they've hurt each other, have both changed in many ways, but still they come together.

15. 'Nothing at All' - Perfume Genius - art rock, pop

You can say what you want but I already know / Our body is breaking down to a single beat / The sadness you carry, it hangs like a ghost / And I'll just tear it down and I'll wear it like a ribbon

note: can be about how the Corinthian doesn't need changing, or editing or anything to be erased. Because he's perfect to Dream.

16. 'Angel Echoes' - Four Tet - microhouse, IDM

[instrumental]

note: yeah, this has no lyrics but it's a very pretty, infectious and satisfying listen. It sounds like what you'd expect from the title. The sample work in it makes the whole song feel like a kaleidoscope of gospel voices. we are now entering the phase in the playlist where lyrics become scarce to convey an intimacy that is felt so deeply it transcends words.

17. 'Moon Is Sharp' - Grouper - ambient pop, dream pop

You are close around me, hang around / There is nothing like that power / And I wonder about this, I remember / Feeling content past the water / I went to sleep, ascending higher

note: this is an ambient track and so the lyrics are not so much lyrics as much as they are just part of the whole sound of the song. The vocals are so wispy in the mix and the whole thing just sounds like an alien transmission of a love song filtering through your speakers like they can barely contain it, or scarcely detect it.

18. 'I Shall Love 2' - Julia Holter - art pop

Why do you squander? / Why do you hoard? / Why do you squander? / Why do you hoard? / In all the human errors there is something true / But do the angels say, do the angels say "I shall love"?

note: I'm not sure what to say about this track other than it's just awesome.

19. 'Just to be Needed' - death's dynamic shroud - vaporwave, glitch pop

Now we've made a bed of stone / Leave a light on for me / And I'll find my way back home / And it's been forever / I don't wanna wait too long / Now that we're together (Not afraid, not afraid)

20. 'I' - Rock and Waves Song Circle - folk, gospel

note: I don't know how well known this album is but if you don't know the background of 'Rocks and Waves Song Circle', they essentially dropped a singular album that contained songs like this out of nowhere and we since know very little about the people singing in it or how everything was produced and recorded, hence the lack of lyrics. This song and the 4 other songs on the album are just the most affecting, organic, glowing pieces of music that don't need the clarity of words to be felt. Again, I wanted this section to be about intimacy that needs no words for understanding.

note: I like to think this song is about cori and dream's love being so big that it ripples into the dreams of the collective unconsciousness. or on a literal sense, dreamers finding tomes of their love story in the dreaming's library.
