Retreat Syndrome
Camille Rose Garcia, 2002
In Camille Rose Garcia’s book Tragic Kingdom, she cites a story by Philip K. Dick called “Retreat Syndrome,” in which the main character undergoes trauma and creates his own delusional parallel reality as a coping mechanism. When he realizes the state of his glass house, so to speak... the floor shatters.
This particular piece results largely due to 9/11; many people in the United States had turned to prescription drugs to cope with the stress and uncertainty of the world.
Speaks to our current world reality. It’s been hard to hold.
