The best way to protect your rights, is to know your rights. Here’s what you need to know about the first amendment to the U.S. constitution:
What the 1st amendment covers: - congress can not make the U.S. Have an official religion - This is why there is a lot of current controversy over Christian symbols on government property - free exercise of religion - anyone can practice any religion they choose - free speech/press- protects most words said and printed, as well symbolic gestures - under this you can burn the flag, not salute the flag, use/make political cartoons, and say your opinions - you CANNOT shout ‘FIRE’ in a crowded place, make obscene speeches at a school, or advocate for illegal substances at a school, say something that would likely make someone commit an act of violence (fighting words), slander/libel - right to petition - you can petition the government, sue the government, and lobby the government. - right to assemble - you can always have a group of people protesting, as long as it is peaceful. The government can put restrictions on the time, place, and manner of the assembly. - you CANNOT have an assembly in which there is rioting, disorder, disruption of traffic, or endangerment of public safety
