Review of The Wildes: A Novel in Five Acts by Louis Bayard
The Wildes: A Novel in Five Acts follows the story of Oscar Wilde's wife, Constance Wilde, and his sons, Cyril and Vyvyan, before and after the trials of Oscar Wilde. It shows the perspective of the people around Wilde who were affected by how the public's image of him changed and how his arrest changed the lives of his family. And how a few weeks in the country can show all the cracks in a respectable family.
It is clear the level of research and attention to detail Louis Bayard put into this novel. It's so beautifully written and so powerful to see the stories of the people around Oscar Wilde. The people less talked about who were just as affected. The tone of the novel and how the characters speak is so majestic and poetic in a way that works so well for these historical figures.
On this day in history Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde is imprisoned for gross indecency for homosexual acts. Allegedly the worst case his judge ever tried, his judge claimed allegedly despite having also tried serial murderers and more. In trying to make an example of Wilde and get rid of Englands queer problem (allegedly) and all because one Marquess could not leave a well spoken (albeit period typically dubious) alone they made a martyr of Wilde and made the already spiteful LGBTs even more petty and spiteful.
