Today. And in those two hours CNN became much more than some sick realty show with reruns that play over and over again. The passion & hurt in this woman's voice & eyes made my heart cry about things that never quite seemed realistic to me. The War on Iraq and it's after math is REAL and it destructs people every single day that you and I are spending our Saturday mornings at day spas & our Sunday afternoons at cafés for brunch. I helped this woman to verbalize & translate to English her personal accounts as a child waking from a slumber to the sounds of people screaming, babies crying & bombs exploding. She shared with me the details of the bunkers below their homes that they would escape to for safety. She told me about how at only 10 she can recall watching television with her parents after evacuating to Spain the exact day, January 16th 1991, when our current president pushed forward with Operation Desert Storm and her television screen was the splitting image to the picture above. Since then her country and her heritage has been in consistent turmoil and it's left The beautiful place she once called home in shambles. She shared with me that now as an adult, some 30+ years of age, she had been trying to obtain a visa to revisit Baghdad where some of her family still lives but had been denied a visa time after time. She finally was granted the opportunity in January of this year but to her surprise was greeted at the airport to droves of Iraqi military personnel. She was told that her aunt was not allowed to greet her at the airport. That she had to taxi off site for a civilian to meet her.
